@MarioALNG@SlavaMalamud@watakant Congrats, EPL has achieved mid major college football fandom in a random US metro. I’m terms of total viewers, EPL has almost reached high mid major college football viewership. Again, take a bow.
@MarioALNG@SlavaMalamud@watakant Which EPL teams do you think US fans gravitate to? EPL kit worn on US streets are Arsenal and Man U not Sunderland. People tend to be band wagon fans in general and more so with international clubs. It’s fine. You still are getting the super fan purity prize. It doesn’t exist.
@MarioALNG@SlavaMalamud@watakant Golf is far more popular than EPL. Billionaire owners with both parity & scarcity models. Scarcity billionaires aren’t going to give you a cookie for caping for them. Parity works in US. Even MLB’s realized it & expanded their playoffs. Tix & viewers up. Money grab too obviously.
@MarioALNG@SlavaMalamud@watakant I buy mid-major college sports tix, minor league hockey, etc but only watch the best. NFL has become the most popular sport by far in the US in large part because of parity. Many soccer fans are easily angered about US & soccer, likely because soccer’s not widely popular here.
@MarioALNG@SlavaMalamud@watakant I’m a sicko. I’ve paid for and watched plenty of lower-tier sports. The move to Apple TV was final straw. MLS is poorly run. I sorta follow the Union. EPL is better soccer, and I’m a front-runner. I’m a Philadelphia sports fan. Disappointment is the norm. Don’t need it from EPL.
@MarioALNG@SlavaMalamud@watakant I get that. You’re talking about an extreme group of outliers in the US which has a large immigrant component. I like parity and still watch EPL some because I like soccer. I’ve never been able to sustain interest in MLS because it’s run like bad minor league baseball.
@MarioALNG@SlavaMalamud@watakant US fans mostly like parity. Much complaining about baseball being dominated by ~ 10 big market teams & bb has more parity than soccer. Soccer fans are a tiny subset of US sports fans. US will mostly return to ignoring soccer when the WC ends until the next big int’l tournament.
@MarioALNG@SlavaMalamud@watakant EPL has far less viewers than NASCAR. It’s a niche sport. Liga MX? You might want to consider who lives in US. I like soccer and watch EPL. But I understand I’m not the norm here.
@MarioALNG@SlavaMalamud@watakant MLS isn’t popular because it’s not elite. US fans will not support non-elite product. The US analogue is college sports where parity has largely been crushed by SEC and Big Ten. But college sports fandom is driven by different factors than pro sports.
@MarioALNG@SlavaMalamud@watakant You mentioned NFL. NBA and NHL don’t have the same level of dominance by small number of teams. Knicks are eighth different NBA champion in eight seasons. That never happens in Europe at least not in the top leagues. Spurs are in least affluent NBA market. They have 5 titles.
@MarioALNG@SlavaMalamud@watakant Since 1996 one NFL team has won 5+ Super Bowls. In EPL 5 teams have won 5+ FA Cups & they have nearly every title in that time span. No US pro league comes close to the big team dominance of Euro football. Even baseball hasn’t and it has a very big market bias by US standards.
@richavendando@cloutdraculah Not what I said but you seem to be determined to be angry. I don’t care if billionaire team owners in soccer or football expand their reach since I’m not one of them. Dim wits need their sports preferences affirmed. It’s childish but common. Done here dog. Smell ya later.
@richavendando@cloutdraculah Sports franchises and media looking for new markets and more revenue? I find that hard to believe. You have absolutely no clue about soccer in the US. That’s not surprising since you don’t appear to live here. Funny how some US and global fans are so easily hurt by reality.
@BahlestKimmie The World Cup is an Olympic level event which we are hosting. MLS games on ESPN averaged roughly the same as Sun Belt football does and less than mid-tier ACC basketball. Soccer isn’t widely popular & that’s ok. Just enjoy the games. I’m finished with this. Have a good one.
@BahlestKimmie@jollywipradio Baseball is #2. NASCAR draws 2x more than EPL does on OTA. NHL still draws more than soccer. The sport continues to grow in popularity, but it trails not just pro sports but power conference college sports. That’s reality no matter how chapped it makes soccer fans.
@ahchoen@jollywipradio Soccer is global sport but is a niche sport in the US. US football isn’t global sport but Super Bowl is able to draw a large audience. I’ve been hearing since the 70s that soccer is on cusp of being major US sport. Won’t happen until US has top tier pro league which isn’t likely.
@BahlestKimmie@jollywipradio Where did I write that no one cares? I understand that there are plenty of reflexive “Soccer sucks” dorks in the US which is what the OP was directed at. That doesn’t change the fact that soccer isn’t as popular as the NBA and comparing World Cup to NBA Finals is disingenuous.
