On May 22, 2010, Laszlo Hanyecz made history by using 10,000 BTC to buy two pizzas, the first real-world transaction ever made with Bitcoin.

Back then, Bitcoin was just an experiment and very few people believed in it. But Laszlo’s purchase proved that Bitcoin could be used as real money in the real world.

Today, those 10,000 BTC would be worth millions, but the transaction was never a mistake. It became the foundation of Bitcoin adoption and is now celebrated globally as Bitcoin Pizza Day. 🍕₿

How to Eat a Cake at a Funeral

Most people think life is either a funeral or a birthday.

I think it is both at the same time.

A child eats pizza for the first time while another person suffers from obesity. A teacher gets paid in Bitcoin while a government prints more money. Monkeys jump in trees beside a village with no electricity. A man discovers freedom money after first meeting it through a scam. An orphan laughs on a bus to the zoo while carrying years of silent grief nobody can see.

That is life.

The mistake is thinking joy is disrespectful in the presence of suffering. Or that suffering cancels the right to build, dance, laugh, flirt, travel, dream, or celebrate. But some of the strongest people I know are the ones who learned how to eat cake at funerals. Not because they are insensitive. Because they understand survival.

In Uganda, in Bitcoin, in Africa, in post-catastrophe places, I have seen this deeply. People rebuild while mourning. They trade while grieving. They joke while broke. They plant gardens beside collapsed systems. They teach children sovereignty while politicians debate power. They create circular economies in places outsiders only see as charity cases.

The world teaches extremes:
Either become numb to pain
Or become consumed by it.

But there is a third path:
Carry both.

Carry the funeral and still pass around the cake.

This philosophy is not about denial. It is about refusing psychological surrender. It is understanding that hope is infrastructure. Celebration is resistance. A shared meal is strategy. Tourism can become diplomacy. Bitcoin can become memory storage for human labor. A bus ride for an orphan can become proof that imagination still works.

Sometimes the cake is small.
One egg.
One sats payment.
One joke.
One sunrise over the Nile.
One teacher salary paid on time.
One child writing their dream down for the first time.

Still eat it.

Because civilizations collapse slowly when people lose meaning before they lose resources.

That is why I care about circular economies, schools, stories, safaris, energy projects, workshops, and children learning how to achieve their dreams. They are all connected. They are all attempts to teach people that they are not permanently trapped inside the funeral.

The funeral is real.
Corruption is real.
Inflation is real.
War is real.
Loss is real.

But so is the cake.

And wisdom is learning not to waste either.
