Actual proposed partition looks very different than today’s reality. Here is a Times Magazine cover of the proposed partition in 1945! Years before the actual 1947 partition. If you notice at this time there was no idea of a “East Pakistan” just Muslim majority Bengal as an independent state with capital in Kolkata.

Too much revisionist history on both sides have muddied the waters. But the vision of a “United India” post partition was never a reality. Most people did not see themselves as “Indian”; that is a modern identity. Same for Pakistan.
