The list of health harms tied to Big Tobacco keeps growing. We’ve known that tobacco companies intentionally designed cigarettes to create and sustain addiction and aggressively marketed them to kids, while denying it all.
According to new research, tobacco companies applied that same playbook to the development and marketing of ultra-processed food products, engineering these unhealthy products to keep consumers – including kids – coming back from more.
It’s one more way in which Big Tobacco has contributed to the rise of cardiovascular disease, cancer and other serious diseases.

More hypocrisy from Big Tobacco: Philip Morris International claims it wants to end cigarette sales.
But it continues to aggressively market cigarettes around the world and has launched a new global marketing campaign for its Marlboro cigarettes that is clearly targeted at young people, as recently exposed by The Guardian.
Don’t be fooled by Philip Morris: If the company was serious about ending cigarette sales, it wouldn’t be launching a new ad campaign for cigarettes.

NEW: The tobacco company Reynolds American donated $5M to the Trump-backed super PAC MAGA Inc. on 4/30/2026.
8 days later, the Trump administration rolled out a new policy that could be lucrative for Reynolds by allowing it to begin selling flavored vapes https://t.co/tAivofBoaG
A major victory for kids and public health: The Oregon Supreme Court has upheld Washington County’s law ending the sale of flavored tobacco products. Flavored products fuel youth tobacco use, and local communities must be able to act to protect kids.
This ruling sends a powerful message that communities can stand up to the tobacco industry and put health first. To protect all Oregon kids, the state legislature should end flavored tobacco sales statewide.

.@Formula1 is building a global youth audience by partnering with @Disney, @LEGO_Group and @Mattel Hot Wheels. Tobacco giants Philip Morris International and British American Tobacco are cashing in, sponsoring F1 teams to promote their nicotine pouch and e-cigarette brands.
Ahead of F1’s Miami Grand Prix on May 3, we’re launching a new ad campaign, End the Formula, calling on F1 to end all tobacco sponsorships. The same sport that partners with tobacco companies shouldn’t help Big Tobacco peddle addiction to kids.

We applaud New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez for his leadership in suing major convenience store chains and distributors for selling illegal, flavored disposable e-cigarettes that lure kids into nicotine addiction.
Attorney General Torrez is right: These products “are engineered to taste like candy, designed to be hidden in a backpack, and loaded with enough nicotine to create a lifelong addiction. The retailers and distributors who profit from these products will be held accountable.”
