Engagement rate is the number of interactions (likes/comments/shares) divided by total impressions.
I've been tracking engagement rate as if it were a sign of quality content. Now I have a signal that shows my most successful post has the worst engagement rate. Your post on impressions was the perfect opportunity to get rl feedback.
Appreciate it.
Elk hunting makes me a better entrepreneur.
Every October I spend weeks on prep: license draws, flights with a rifle case, food for four days above 9,000 feet, and enough coordination with my hunting partner that we're not improvising in the field on where to hunt and how to pack an animal out.
It's the same muscle as running DF Seeds. Plan for what you can control, build in slack, and trust the person next to you to do their part.
Also, apparently, I still need to lose 10 lbs. Some prep never changes.
DF 144 R won the MSU Variety Trials. This is a medium maturity, medium statured plant with great yield and strong test weight. It offers an excellent standability rating and the Fhb1 Head Scab gene for protection. Secure your wheat order today! #MIFarmer#wheat#agriculture"
I cringe because a farmer's cost-of-production advantage gets competed away fast. Any farmer can chase the same input, the same efficiency gain, the same yield trick. The only margin that lasts is the kind competitors can't reach.
Look at Cosmic Crisp apples. WSU patented the variety, licensed it exclusively to Washington growers, and locked out the rest of the country until 2032. Growers pay a royalty on every box, and still come out ahead, because nobody else can grow it.
That's not an input advantage. That's a closed market, built on purpose.
Very few ag-input companies can build that kind of structure for farmers. Most are selling a better tool to compete with everyone else.
If I could have only one tool to run DF Seeds, it would be the 13-week cash flow.
Two months ago, my model flagged a gap. I had found a six-figure liquidity crunch heading our way. So we called every dealer in our network to get real numbers on payment timing and open orders. Next, we instituted a prepayment program for our next crop before it became a problem, rather than after.
Most entrepreneurs find out about a cash problem when it's already a cash problem. We had two months of runway to fix ours.
58% feels high. The definition of a searcher likely matters a lot.
My blind guesses at the close and success rates are 30% and 10%, respectively.
Again, a 55-60% chance of closing a transaction feels high.
Roughly 42% of searchers never acquire a company.
Of those who do, approximately 26% ultimately lose money.
Those aren’t reasons not to search.
They are reasons to make the decision with clear eyes, honest motivations, and a healthy dose of humility.

@ShowMeYourCIM I have been asking Claude how to negotiate and position myself with my banker. I, of course, edit Claude’s approach and ask my lawyer for his input. The lawyer always advises the same approach as Claude.
Time will tell if the three of us are any good.
I echo this message. Doing well in grade school and earning an Ivy League degree allowed me to have a lucrative finance career that taught me invaluable lessons. Stage 2 of life in entrepreneurship has been gratifying for the autonomy and upside potential, albeit with a lower probability of “success”.
I would add that you do not need to focus on finance or consulting in NYC or SF. Many cities have finance and consulting jobs that offer great comp with a lower cost of living.

Earlier this week, DF Seeds hosted multiple wheat training sessions. The purpose of wheat training is to educate our dealers about our current wheat products so that they can help their customers make informed decisions. Wheat training helps make us Locally Grown, Locally Proven.
