The first comment, five years old: "Bravo." One word, cheering a siege fought before anyone in that thread was born, like applauding a scoreline.

Then, three weeks ago, a reply: "pauvre grenouille!" — poor frog.

Almost two centuries separate the actual battle from this exchange, and yet the charge hasn't faded at all — it's just moved address, from cannon fire to a comment box.
"Bravo" and "pauvre grenouille" are the same gesture in mirror: neither commenter lost or won anything at Constantine, but each has claimed the event as personally theirs — one as pride, one as grievance.

That's the whole mechanism of memory, really.
The event itself is over and fixed.
What isn't fixed is what it means — that gets rebuilt fresh in every person who picks it up, depending on which side of the wall they imagine their own history standing on.
Two people, same image, two entirely different stories. Neither is really describing 1837.
Both are describing themselves.
