MD,MSc,MRCPsych,Consultant Psychiatrist in Neurodevelopmental Disorders in ADHD Service, Somerset Foundation NHS Trust, Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer in ARU
Very excited to be starting as a substantive Consultant Psychiatrist in Neurodevelopmental Disorders in Somerset ADHD Service. Huge thanks to all who have supported me throughout all these years of education and training.
Important article by @DrChloeBeale on choices, language & being human. I think I was 1st aware seeing the user-lead "recovery" model be co-opted by restrictive services (just as the initially benevolent "moral treatment" movement became at times socially repressive). A must read!

This is why we need more psychiatrists. Treatment is not working, relapse of a chronic, potentially life threatening illness. We need rapid access to specialist re-assessment and care.
Our new study led by @bhathika showing high sensitivity and specificity for clinical diagnoses of ADHD in adults with intellectual disabilities. In contrast, the DSM V ADHD criteria as assessed by the clinicians was not reliable. Need better dx criteria for ID patients.

Congratulations to all the new members of RCPsych! It's been wonderful to celebrate your achievement today, albeit virtually. Inspiring words from PTC Chair, Dr Rosemary Gordon and all the College Officers. @Rosie_j_g@DrAdrianJames@subodhdave1@TrudiSene1@JohnHMCrichton
Many congratulations to Dr @bathika Perera & the working on producing a highly sought after guidance for ADHD in adults with ID , CR230 https://t.co/Tzu6qjVIDv a Holy Grail for Psychiatrists and Clinicians who are involved in assessment and management of ADHD in ID
ADHD in ID is often complex due to psychiatric, neurodevelopmental and physical comorbidities, not to mention communication difficulties, sensory issues etc. However, diagnosis helps to understand challenges people with ID faces. College report 👇🏼below addresses these.
#ADHD@rcpsych@LdSenate Congratulations to @AdhdSig for creating an excellent and clinically relevant resource for clinicians and people with ADHD-ID. Build the evidence of good practice. @ukaan_org
Very interesting findings. Diagnosis of ADHD has increased in ID population, however it is still way too lower than what research has shown. Autism appears to be closer to studies 20-30% of ID.
Interesting finding on use of melatonin too.
Today we mark Holocaust Memorial Day and are all called to be the light in the darkness.
We remember all who were murdered because of who they were, and reflect on the dark evils of Nazism, anti-Semitism and racism.
We pledge to work for a better future.
