Not to mention, this was a private event. Circulating videos of young people without consent and exposing them to public outrage in a country like ours should itself be a crime. Are we really going to start monitoring and moralising what people wear or do privately? They’re harming no one. Is dancing a crime? Is enjoying yourself criminal? And how can anyone conclude from one video that drugs were involved?
Recently I saw a video of an old man with a long white beard, in shalwar kameez, behaving obscenely in front of a mentally ill young woman. I didn’t see nearly the same outrage or circulation over something actually harmful. We seem far more offended by people enjoying themselves than by people harming others. That says everything about what we choose to police, and who we choose to protect.
