WATCH | A young innovator from Nxamkwana near Mdantsane in the Eastern Cape has, through his company Spectacles4TheBlind, developed AI-powered smart glasses for people with visual impairments. The glasses help users navigate their surroundings more independently.
Road Traffic Infringement Agency spokesperson Monde Mkalipi says the AARTO system will allow companies with a fleet of vehicles to pass infringements to the specific driver who was using the car, preventing the company from bearing the burden.

The mass extraction of African health and DNA data is not a harmless scientific exercise — it is a potential geopolitical weapon.
When foreign powers gain unrestricted access to the genetic blueprints of Kenyans and other Africans, they acquire the ability to map our biological strengths and weaknesses with terrifying precision. That knowledge is not neutral. It can be used to design biological agents, pharmaceuticals, or engineered pathogens calibrated to exploit genetic vulnerabilities unique to African populations, making an entire continent biologically targetable in ways no traditional weapon ever could.
Even without a single bullet fired, control over African DNA allows outsiders to own, patent, and profit from our biological essence, while Africans are reduced to raw material in someone else’s laboratory. The danger is not hypothetical — it is structural. Power lies with whoever holds the data, and if Africans surrender their genetic sovereignty, they risk becoming the first people in history whose biology can be manipulated, commodified, and potentially weaponized against them. This is not data sharing; it is a new frontier of dominance — and Africa must not walk into it blindly.

South Africa’s new demerit system, which is meant to reshape how drivers manage fines, has reportedly paved the way for a surge in sophisticated “ghost fine” scams. The new system is meant to reward good driving and reduce the administrative and legal burden of traffic fines off the court roll. Road Traffic Infringement Agency spokesperson, Monde Mkalipi, joins #Newzroom405's @MasaKekana in studio for more.
