Failure for the USWNT. It was a complete disaster.
It starts at the top in MLS. You may wonder why I bring up MLS here, who operate on the men’s side, but it’s all connected. MLS runs soccer in this country. They heavily influence our governing body.
MLS cares only about MLS. At all costs they will always work to shut down competing leagues and control the narrative for the sport in America. It’s a war of stories.
The MLS agenda to convince the public that MLS is the best thing for the development of soccer in this country, has driven soccer culture all the way down to the youth level.
That’s how this connects to the women’s side. The youth level is now essentially the same thing that MLS fought for decades. Convince the public MLS is the best professional league in America. The youth game is now a competition of leagues as well. Clubs sell their souls to merely get into the almighty league. They work to acquire quantity, take from other clubs to build their power to further demonstrate why they belong in this or that league. They politically maneuver to block other clubs that may be a threat. Those are some of the incentives established from the top so I don’t necessarily blame the youth clubs.
All of this while the leagues build marketing campaigns to convince they are the best league for player development, the best platform to showcase talent, and blah blah blah. It’s all bullshit. The incentives are all wrong. The conversation is that leagues are the solution for young players. GTFOH. No league ever has been responsible for a players development. It’s always THE CLUB!
Id like to think it’s becoming more clear that we are significantly behind the rest of the world. Again the incentives for the clubs aren’t to do the best work in developing their players. As long as this remains the case, we will NOT close the gap, and yes the women’s side will continue to lose their decades long head start on the rest of the world. The men will continue to lag behind the powerful soccer nations, even if our media says we are closing the gap. They significantly over exaggerate “progress” by the way. If there is any at all, it is minuscule.
We need an open market place where all clubs are on an even playing field. Equal opportunity (what the soccer media pretends to advocate for in many instances other than for all clubs). The clubs incentive has to be to do everything possible to best develop their players. With this the sleeping soccer giant in this country will awake.
LET'S TALK ABOUT THROW-INS 🧵(1/23)

Everything changed when I started to listen @ThomasThrowin what he had to say about throw ins and how important they are in today's game.
Thread has an educational purpose.

Trabajé en el Barça. También en 🇪🇨🇺🇸🇳🇿.
Creo que hay algunas ideas equivocadas acerca del RONDO.
En este 🧵 profundizaré en 3 de ellas:
@3four3 From their perspective (one that couldn’t care less about the communities they exclude), much better to be big fish in a small, artificial pond than very common fish in a vast marine ecosystem that is teeming with life we haven’t even discovered yet.
This my dad right here 👇 My whole life he has talked about Maradona, the greats that came before I was born. And now I get to see him happy as he was in 1986.
He’s the reason why I love football so much. I am most happy for HIM! VAMOS CANTOR! Love you, papi 💙 @AndresCantorGOL
Celebrating a World Cup win is one thing, but being able to celebrate such a win with your own blood and someone who got you into the sport is even better.
I'm sure a ton of Argentines are able to share these beautiful father-son moments like Nico & Andres are sharing right now.

@DerekSzanto@tomsan106 The whole pipeline matters, from cradle to grave.
Culture is king, but the wrong culture and incentives at the pro level will systematically destroy any talent pool at the beginning of the pipe.
Carli Lloyd is that person where someone puts together a powerpoint for her and then she reads it word for word as it's on the screen. Alexi Lalas is that person where someone puts together a powerpoint for him and doesn't read any of what's on the screen. Neither works.
@DanPoche My point is the US youth club structure does not produce players with abilities to play modern styles like JdP & it’s too late to teach this when players are “the best” & reach the USMNT. Unlike Spain, the US youth club culture is about “Big Box” clubs & closed “elite” leagues.
Explanation: “pragmatic” means Berhalter wants a JdP style, but most USMNT players are a product of a US youth club system that did not train them for it so let’s play long ball & use our “athletes”. “Romantic” means trying to train players in JdP at this late career stage.
Positional Play coaches must understand individual & collective AUTOMATISMS & how to instill them. Collective automatisms cannot occur optimally unless every player masters individual automatisms - instinctive techniques for properly positioning body, receiving, passing etc.
