@DWJDuck@TylerTylerson33 Never said that. His base path is 3ft from where he is once the fielder makes a movement towards him. Once that happens Clement takes 6 steps towards right field going far beyond his 3 ft path. It’s really not that hard to understand
Even after diving head first back towards the bag he is still a good 3 feet away. Clement is 6FT tall, that means he ran at least 9 feet towards right field. The second Gunnar starts moving towards him with the ball in his glove, it is a tag attempt. It is an egregiously bad call
Again, the runner establishes his own path and can be anywhere. Once the tag attempt starts, you draw a line from the runner to the base, and he has three feet either way, and Clement was inside that three feet.
The rule is the rule, so this was called correctly from what I see.
I’m sure @CloseCallSports will have a breakdown.
@bringerofSPF60@TalkinStros@tags_Mike17 Look at the MLB umpire manual dude. It states an attempted tag is “any instance a defensive player holding the ball moves directly towards a baserunner”
@CapnChad@BrianDembo It is the question as soon as the fielder makes a movement towards towards the runner. Once that happens the runner must stay within 3 feet either way towards the base. In this instance the runner than moves roughly 9 feet to the right once a move has been made by the fielder
@TylerTylerson33@MattAmoruso You said multiple times he never made an attempt and then you switched it to he “barely even an attempt” and now it’s never said he needed to attempt
@TylerTylerson33@MattAmoruso You’ve actually said multiple times you need to make a tag attempt. The umpire manual states a “attempt” starts as soon as the fielder makes a movement towards towards the runner. From that point Clement took 6 steps towards right field. Do Canadians not know what a foot is?
@CapnChad According to MLB umpire manual, no physical tag attempt is required. Once the fielder possesses the ball and makes a movement towards the runner, that is a tag attempt. That is directly from the umpires manual
@TylerTylerson33@MattAmoruso No I wouldn’t because it was that egregious of a call. Look at the umpires manual. A tag attempt the fielder making a movement towards the runner with possession of the ball. No physical tag attempt is required. That is directly from MLB umpire manual
Possibly relevant: 2019 Umpire Manual (couldn't find a more recent version) says ...
"So long as the umpire determines that a play is being made on the runner and an attempt to tag is occurring, i.e. the fielder is moving to tag the runner, no physical tag attempt is required."
@rjw19343 No. It is correct that the base path is established when a fielder attempts to tag you, even still he went close to 10 feet out of the way once that occurs. There is no argument to be made that he stays in his base path. He objectively does not.
@TylerTylerson33 He is on the inside of Gunnar when he fields the ball and takes 6 steps towards right field to avoid the tag, that is far more than 3ft. Hardly even an attempt is still an attempt. When a fielder is running towards you with the ball he is attempting to tag you
@bringerofSPF60 “The second Gunnar starts moving towards him with the ball in his glove it is a tag attempt” learn to read pal. And even later Gunnar extended his arm to try and tag him when Ernie then diverted 9 feet to his right to avoid
@TylerTylerson33 Rule 5.09(b)(1), “a runner is out if they run more than 3 feet away from their BASE PATH to avoid being tagged.” Nice try just pulling something out of thin air though
I just went 125-37 on @ChasinBase. Can you hit 116 wins and break the MLB record? #Chasin117 https://t.co/ab6RupqAkY
Took me 4 days to break 116 and I did it with authority
Did he go out of the baseline? Absolutely. But they established earlier in the game that if you are trying to avoid a tag you can go as far out as you want
“A runner is out if they run more than 3 feet out of their established base path to avoid being tagged by a fielder”they blew the call so badly that they are quite literally making things up to justify their horrible call The entire crew must be suspended and investigated @MLBUA
Umpires postgame said Ernie Clement can move to avoid fielding. That becomes his lane.
Hunter Wendelstedt: "He was vacating an area to let the fielder field it, and then the fielder just tried to, you know, was hoping and praying, throwing up the Hail Mary to try and get two."
Lentz isn’t even looking at the runner when Gunnar fielded the ball. Also you don’t get to run 7 feet out of the baseline to avoid the fielder, especially when the fielder is still 10 feet away. This is one of the most basic calls an umpire will ever make and they blew it
