🥃 💲 ⚖️ New twist in French liquor giant Pernod Ricard's long-running India tax fight....

The maker of Chivas Regal and Absolut has withdrawn its court challenge to India's $314 million back-tax demand, in a dispute over the alleged undervaluation of its Scotch whisky imports for years.

But it's not backing down. Instead of fighting in court, Pernod is switching to appeal before the tax authority itself -- a change of tack nine months into the legal battle, for reasons that remain unclear.

The stakes are steep: with penalties, the payout could top $600 million if Pernod loses -- a fifth of its $2.9 billion India revenue last year, and three times its profit.

India is Pernod's biggest market by volume, and this tax case sits alongside an antitrust probe and a Delhi liquor ban the company is also contesting.
