I am increasingly fascinated by the contrast between the British political class's attitude towards the Taleban's policies towards women, political freedom etc, and its very different attitude towards the very similar attitudes of the Saudi Arabian state.
In the past, the disasters we are seeing around the world might have seemed like an absurd plot in some apocalypse movie. Unfortunately, this is our new reality, and it will only get much worse in years to come if we do not act boldly – now.

1) Hawks start wars in far-flung corners of globe.
2) Defense contractors get paid.
3) American soldiers die.
4) Contractors lobby for more money.
5) The defense budget grows.
6) America withdraws.
7) Repeat.
Exxon knew all about the climate crisis in 1982 and they buried it because if the public knew fossil fuels are responsible for rising global temperatures, it would create a demand for alternative energy. Big Oil's profit motive is why the planet is headed toward a catastrophe.

Today let us all remember that George W Bush is not just an old amateur painter. W lied about the Afghanistan & Iraq wars that cost millions of lives & trillions of dollars, botched Katrina, led us into a Great Recession, tried to privatize Social Security & cut taxes for the 1%.

On Social Security's 86th birthday, never forget. In 1936 the GOP campaigned to repeal it attacking it as "socialism," "the largest tax bill in history," "a fraud," & "a cruel hoax" that would "enslave workers." The result? The GOP lost in a landslide. No reconciliation, no deal.
