When communities embrace legal innovation, they achieve community-centred justice.
Below are our thoughts from the recently concluded Voice of Ngora competition, which saw tens of people in Ngora District compete to be the voice that delivers a justice message to their community through a scripted legal skit on the radio.

The @JudiciaryUG National Open Court Day is a good opportunity for people to learn about #courts, but a better opportunity for courts to learn about the #people they serve. This 2way knowledge exchange will greatly improve people centered justice. #NCOD26@JoelWegoye@elisonk
Today we hosted our partner @NUDIPU at our Ntinda offices to conduct an accessibility assessment to help us understand how accessible our office is for persons with disabilities and identify areas for improvement.
This is part of our commitment to serving all communities and moving toward reasonable accommodation as a global standard.
We look forward to more of these engagements and appreciate the NUDIPU team for their insight and guidance.
The search is still on!

"There are things that the law cannot do. It cannot enter a child's dream and determine whether it is a prophecy or indigestion. It cannot adjudicate the metaphysical question of whether a man goes under the sea. It cannot replace the felt reality of a community's fear with a statute book.
But there are things it can do and must do. It must protect the vulnerable from the tyranny of the majority and ensure that no person loses their land, their liberty, or their place in their community based on a rumor and a show of hands." This is the story of how BarefootLaw uses the law to transform mindsets and reconcile communities."

“For BarefootLaw, The Ultimate Law is Humanity”
In a panel discussion on pro bono, preventing and addressing climate change and environmental harms at the #LIDW26, our CEO @abila1914 posited that engaging in pro bono work is what makes a lawyer humane.
He opined that the law should be used to make ourselves more humane while improving humanity especially in the technology era.
The rise of artificial intelligence has seen AI try to mimic human behavior in many contexts. One sure way for a lawyer to “future proof” themselves from the questions on human relevance is to engage in pro bono work. Pro bono work gets the lawyer in touch with their humanity, which is the ultimate law.
At BarefootLaw, interacting with grassroot communities and making the law accessible to them in a manner they understand has over the years taught us what really matters - humanity.
We are using the law as a tool to deliver justice that is sensitive to humanity.

At this year’s @LIDW_ , our CEO @abila1914 will be speaking about BarefootLaw’s approach to expanding access to justice and the realities of serving communities where legal challenges are deeply connected to social and economic issues.
At the heart of our work are pro bono lawyers working at the grassroots level. Their dedication helps people understand their rights and access justice when they need it most. Looking forward to sharing lessons from our journey and learning from others committed to closing the justice gap.

In line with Ministry of Health guidelines, BarefootLaw will not be holding community gatherings for the time being, and to help keep everyone safe, we are limiting physical engagements at our head office in Kampala, and at the various BarefootLaw Box locations across the country.
You can still reach us for free legal support through the channels listed on the poster.
