If a teacher stood in front of pupils and said gay people “destroy the human race” and should be executed in certain countries, they’d be out of a job before the end of the day.

If a foster carer or youth worker pushed that message, they’d be barred from working with children and facing police questions.

Yet when the same rhetoric is delivered by an imam in a UK mosque, to a youth audience, it gets bundled up as “religious teaching” and kicked down the road to a slow charity investigation.

Safeguarding is supposed to be about the child, not the job title of the adult.

If we really believe violent homophobia is a form of abuse, then it has to be treated as abuse wherever it happens – including in taxpayer‑funded religious institutions.
