“I have decided not to contest the trial proceedings further. My decision shall not be treated....as acceptance of the allegations made against me. I request for capital punishment.”

These are the words Yasin Malik placed before a Delhi court in a 25 page affidavit on 24th of August this year after eight long years of confinement and after rejecting every charge levelled against him. He hands the final verdict, in that single declaration, to the very machinery that has held him on trumped-up charges. It is a revolutionary’s trust placed in the judiciary of his tormentors and a refusal to grant their process the dignity of prolonged contest while simultaneously demanding that it complete its own logic without the comfort of his further participation. He does not plead or bargain but simply withdraws the body from the arena and asks the system to finish what it began, thereby exposing the hollow theatre of a justice that can neither release nor fully silence him. He elects the rope as the only honest verdict left in a process built to break him!

“Through this affidavit, I also wish to address my wife and my daughter. For the last eight years, I have not been able to hear your voices...as I was not permitted phone calls or video conferencing with you. I know that my time with you has been limited and uncertain and I do not want you to spend the rest of your life carrying the burden of my circumstances or living as a widow.”

From the same death cell he turns to the private wreckage his tormentors have inflicted and frees his wife from the nikah so she will not spend her remaining decades chained to a name they have already marked for erasure, while the only presence left beside him is the photograph of a 13 year old daughter whose voice he has not heard since she was five. His tormentors consume the fragile structure of ordinary love and reduce him to the position of a man who waits for the gallows the way a die-hard romantic waits for a final meeting that this life will never allow. Perhaps revolutionaries are simply not made for the soft architecture of love and a vindictive occupation never fails to punish that romance by turning a private life into a second battlefield. The man sits alone with a picture and a decision and the words he leaves behind confront those of us who still move freely through a free world with the blunt fact of how completely a human being can be stripped to four walls and a single photograph but still refuses to let the occupation claim his last human ties as further trophies.
