Most people think blockchain is slow because of consensus.
It's not.
The bigger bottleneck is often the data layer.
Ethereum still uses Gossip protocol to spread blocks, the same approach as forwarding a full WhatsApp video to 500 people, one by one. Under real network conditions with packet loss, it completely falls apart.
I built an interactive benchmark to show exactly what's happening and what Optimum is fixing.
Here's what Gossip actually does:
Every node sends the full, identical copy of a block to every peer.
Lose packets, and the network starts paying for the same information multiple times.
If 38% of packets drop (common in global networks) then bandwidth explodes, propagation slows, validators miss attestations.
Validators far from major nodes in North America or Europe already face higher latency penalties, and Gossip makes this structurally worse for everyone.
Missed attestations = missed rewards.
Slow propagation = worse MEV capture.
Speed = money.
So I built this: https://t.co/W1cCVzO2sC
Traditional Gossip:
watch nodes turn blue, red, green. Push packet loss to 38% with Max Load Test and watch the network slow down.
RLNC (Optimum's mump2p):
nodes turn orange (coded packet in flight), then green.
Even at 38% packet loss, blocks continue to reconstruct with 0 messages lost.
Same network. Same conditions. Side by side.
Instead of sending full copies, RLNC breaks the block into mathematically coded pieces.
Any node can forward any coded piece.
A receiver doesn't need every specific packet.
It just needs enough of them.
It reconstructs the full block mathematically from whatever arrives.
Loss is handled by the coding itself, not retransmits.
Optimum mainnet isn't live yet.
But the Hoodi testnet data is real. The numbers in this benchmark are from actual validator results.
This is the infrastructure layer web3 doesn't talk about enough.
The difference becomes obvious once you see it in motion.
