@musicandroots I said I agree Mendelssohn is great; I disagree on Saint-Saens being low-tier & simply point out your line of critique is similar to that used by detractors of Mendelssohn. Liszt, Berlioz, Faure, Ravel, Rossini & Von Bulow would also disagree w you about Saint-Saens.
@musicandroots I love Mendelssohn but it’s a historical fact that many prominent critics from his time & beyond called him 2nd tier, not due to his craftsmanship but said he that was too masterful, lacking emotional depth, had superficial brilliance, too restrained, etc. Basically “no spark”
@musicandroots Your Saint-Saens critique is akin to what some say of Mendelssohn. “He’s a genius prodigy expert craftsman w wonderful melodies, innovative structure & masterfully prolifically composed w exceptional orchestration in every genre, but… spark”
@symeew13 It happens every time. You talk about Meatloaf’s music and people go “who?” Then you say, “you know, Marvin Lee Aday,” and they reply “oh yeah, why didn’t you just say Marvin Lee Aday to begin with? how am I supposed to know his birth name was Meatloaf?”
