Gender-based violence remains widespread in Uganda; yet justice remains out of reach for many survivors.
Despite progressive legal frameworks such as the Domestic Violence Act (2010), barriers including social stigma, economic dependence, limited legal awareness and systemic challenges continue to prevent survivors from accessing justice. Data shows that while thousands of cases are reported, only a small fraction make it to court, highlighting a critical gap between policy and practice.
In her latest analysis, @lisajasmine98 examines why survivors still struggle to be heard and outlines the urgent need for a more accessible, accountable and responsive justice system.

The 2nd edition of ASG Diaries - a student-led storytelling space - brought us @BasekaPatience a young #Ugandan who lives by diligence and joy.
She reminded us to keep going even on days when motivation shies away. And she carries what her father taught her: "It is selfish to choose to live a small life."
She intends to head home with a pan-African network and a quiet fire to transform her community.

I recently joined My Grandmother (born 1920) in Kikagate Sub-county, Isingiro District to celebrate 106 years.
She appreciates @KagutaMuseveni for creating SAGE grant that has helped a lot, but says payments delay, coming after 3 months.
Today, our DG @Juliet_Kabera received Master’s students in Public Administration from the @ASG_Africa, for a study visit to learn about REMA’s mandate & responsibilities.
The visit connected their academic learning with Rwanda’s environmental policies, laws & protection efforts.
When a CHILD is born, you give them a name.
Even if the child is still small, that name is for their whole life.
Registering a child is the same.
It gives the child an official name in government records.
The NIN is the child’s number for life
Children do not get a plastic National ID card now, but:
•They are given a NIN (number)
•A NIN stays with them forever
•When they make 16 years + the same NIN will be used to give them a National ID.
Why registration helps children even when they are young
•Schools ask for birth details
•UNEB needs proper identification
•Health and government programs use these records
•Government programs including scholarships may require a learner to be identified as a citizen
•It helps protect children from early marriage and child labour by proving their real age
•Proves parentage-the child belongs to a particular family and makes it easy for them to legally gain their inheritance
•Financial institutions like banks require a NIN to open a bank account for your child
•Passport, land transactions etc require a NIN
As NIRA we would like to walk this journey with a very parent by encouraging you to register your child as early as possible, even at birth. So that you save yourself the future hassle of running around when a NIN is needed most.
Register your child today at the nearest NIRA center within your community

🎥HIGHLIGHTS | Usisi Amandla Fellowship Pioneer Cohort Graduation 🎓
What began as a bold idea in November 2024 has now become a living legacy.
Last week, we celebrated the graduation of the first-ever cohort of the #UsisiAmandla Fellowship — 18 young women who dared to learn, lead and step into spaces that shape Uganda’s public policy landscape.
For one year, these fellows immersed themselves in mentorship, policy analysis, leadership coaching, and evidence-based decision-making.
They questioned norms, confronted challenges, built policy solutions, and discovered the strength of collective voice — Sister Strength.

For any chance you get, write. And keep writing. You'll eventually be shocked of how far you've come or how great you actually are when you revisit your work.
Our Uganda Youth Agenda Lab representative @BasekaPatience is all set for meetings with members of the @UNAFinland team, gearing up for the upcoming capacity-building sessions in Oulu and Tampere this weekend.

This Thursday, our Founder Elone Ainebyoona attended the Matriculation Ceremony of the MPA Pioneer Cohort at the African School of Governance - ASG in Kigali, where three of our Usisi Amandla Fellows are part of the inaugural class.
