Thoroughly enjoyed catching up with my fellow marketing "historical" @StKyamutetera. We compared notes on a topic that's precious to us both i.e. turbo charging Uganda's tourism sector to achieve its full potential.
As always with Kyam (hot-blooded and passionate on all things Uganda) one cannot expect to agree on every aspect but one area we found concensus on, is that Destinations do not grow simply because they are marketed.
They grow faster and more sustainably because people invest in experiences that travellers are willing to pay for. Marketing will bring visitors through the door, but it is the quality and variety of experiences that keeps them longer, brings them back and turns them into ambassadors for a destination.
The paradigm shift in how we bring Explore Uganda to life, is already in motion. We saw it at POATE, where the private sector set the stage; showcasing their ability to compete on a global stage and an innate ambition to grow, innovate and attract more visitors to our destination.
Even so, gakyali mabaga..(we're just getting started..) Public-private partnership is critical in diversifying our tourism offering and creating new experiences that augment our unique basket of natural assets. The highlights of my conversation with @CEOEastAfrica Magazine are shared below.
What opportunities do you see for our tourism sector's growth? Watch the full conversation here: https://t.co/fnsfqqpx2b

When @JulzKagwa walked onto the #LXLEastAfrica set, I thought we were going to talk about tourism and vibes.
We ended up talking about something much bigger: Uganda’s unfinished business.
Why does a country with 50%+ of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, the Source of the Nile, 165 freshwater lakes, unmatched biodiversity, rich culture, food, warmth and beauty still struggle to command the tourism numbers it deserves?
Juliana’s answer was bold, uncomfortable and deeply refreshing.
Uganda does not lack product. Uganda lacks speed. Uganda lacks scale. Uganda lacks consistent marketing. Uganda lacks the courage to turn attention into conversion.
In this conversation, the CEO of @TourismBoardUg opens up on her first year in office, the reinvention of UTB into a true marketing agency, why the private sector must be treated as tourism’s commercial arm, why brand Destination Uganda needs a “digital tsunami”, and why Lake Victoria could and should be our next big tourism frontier- a low hanging fruit.
She also shares her leadership philosophy: break the equilibrium, challenge the status quo, and treat every day like Day One.
This is one of those conversations every policymaker, investor, hotelier, tour operator, marketer, storyteller and Ugandan who loves this country should watch.
Because if Uganda does not market itself, Uganda remains single.

@cenkuygur@JDVance Why do we have anything against Hezbollah? They're a citizens self defense militia and they are fighting off an Israeli invasion of their country. Would we be against George Washington and the Continental Army for defending themselves against a British invasion? We're NOT Israel.
@cenkuygur@JDVance 🇮🇱 Some figures in Israeli media such as Yaakov Katz the former editor of the Jerusalem Post, are pushing back against other jews for their hysterical reactions to the US-Iran MOU describing their reactions as "an unbelievable degree of immaturity."
@cenkuygur@JDVance And the deal was timely to both parties and they had to compensate Iran for damages caused by Israel. Israel Should accept it lost both the war and battle. prolonging it ofcourse favours Bibi Netanyahu bse without the war in Gaza,Lebanon,Iran he can't win elections
Finally! This is the kind of energy we need from our leaders. I hate to give @JDVance credit, but he’s obviously correct here. It’s infuriating to see them assume they can boss us around when we’re their only remaining ally and they owe us everything.
We hosted @EnabelinUganda and UNESCO to discuss the implementation of the EU-funded WeExplore Project under the Sustainable Tourism Value Chain Initiatives Programme.
Together, we explored opportunities to strengthen collaboration in sustainable tourism development, tourism standards and certification, destination development, heritage conservation, and increasing community participation and benefits from tourism.
Through partnerships such as these, we continue to advance a more sustainable, competitive, and inclusive tourism sector for Uganda.

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out, because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out, because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out, because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me…and there was no one left to speak for me - Martin Niemoller.
We should all be reminded that injustice only succeeds when people wait until it’s their turn to face it.
No one is safe until we’re all safe!
I think NTV Uganda summarised very well the killings that Gen Kahinda Otafiire talked about after giving the office of Minister of internal affairs to Prof Kamuntu, story by @Solomon_Kaweesa
NTV strikes again!
They've just served up a six-minute feature on Muhoozi Kainerugaba's "achievements" as CDF over the last two years of his reign.
Witty. Brutal. Nuanced. Smirky.
Watch it. Laugh. Cry. Do both at the same time. 😂

I returned to observe what we are losing and how long we have left with the permanent glaciers.
The Rwenzoris are melting, quietly, faster than most people know.
In 1906 - 6.5km² of glacier ice.
Today - less than 1km ².
We have so far lost like 3 permanent glaciers since I last visited in 2020.
