The epicenter of artemisinin resistance appears to be Rwanda and Uganda, yet very close to eastern DRC. This region is therefore highly exposed and would play a critical role in the spread of resistance genes (primarily the kelch13 propeller domain). We are in danger !
🚨 New study from the @CTDGH
Xpert detects rifampicin resistance but can give false positives when TB bacterial load is low. 🧬
🔍 Findings call for caution & further research to refine TB diagnostic.

➡️ 'Anopheles' mosquitoes, which transmit malaria, have a relatively short lifespan (3-4 weeks).
🌍 They are found on all continents except Antarctica.

Drug-resistant infections are on the rise across Africa, making common illnesses harder to treat.
A new study led by @AfricaCDC and partners, covering 14 countries and 187,000+ lab results, reveals alarming resistance to key antibiotics and serious gaps in testing and data systems. Learn more: https://t.co/wn1JUQJusR

Absolutely fascinating paper! Some of the best examples of learning from evolution comes from non-human GWAS.
A missense mutation (discovered previously via a GWAS) in FREP1 encoding a mosquito gut protein provides near complete resistance to malarial parasite infection.
The beauty of genetics is it not only pinpoints the protein that needs to be targeted, it also tells what function of the protein could be targeted without killing the entire protein (which will impose fitness costs)
In this case, the FREP1 protein is critical for normal physiological functions of mosquito host. But the missense mutation selectively affects the function that is hijacked by the parasites to invade the mosquito gut.
Here the authors propose driving this protective allele in to the wild mosquito population (instead of deleting the gene which is lethal and might not help the gene drive) using modern genetic tools would be an effective approach to eliminate malaria.

Ever heard of #genomics? It’s the study of all our DNA. By understanding the story of genomics we can unlock a world of possibilities for global health care.
We are opening a new phase of Genomic Surveillance in South Africa. This is a major public health collaboration to scale up monitoring and analyzing genetic information from pathogens, this was officially launched in Cape Town. Watch the whole video at: https://t.co/9ewIT4bqAH
Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia has a case fatality rate of 15% to 30% and causes 300 000 deaths per year worldwide.
This Review discusses management of S aureus bacteremia.

Selon l’UNICEF (2023), 45 % des décès d’enfants de moins de 5 ans sont liés à la malnutrition.
Et au Sud-Kivu, les chiffres sont encore plus alarmants dans certaines zones rurales.

Alert ⚠️⚠️🚨🚨
In the coming days, we will witness an unprecedented famine if nothing is done! It is time for everyone, according to their possibilities, to take action.
Congrats, team! I must admit that this is the very first scientific paper in which my name appears (since the MedFac I have also contributed to other ongoing publications).
A remarkable sign: first paper, boom, in The Lancet, a dream medical journal! Thank you, great team.
