Unlike ERC-20, which runs entirely through smart contracts, B20 tokens execute as Rust precompiles embedded directly into Base's node software. Base engineers describe it as "our own version of ERC-20" — same transfer, approve, balanceOf signatures, so every wallet and app keeps working unchanged.

Why it matters:
→ Transfers ~50% cheaper than standard ERC-20
→ Throughput roughly doubles
→ Deploy a token with zero custom smart contract code
→ Built-in compliance: role-based permissions, supply caps, freeze/seize controls, audited by Base and Spearbit

Who it's really for:
