My dad has never trusted doctors. He’s 68, spent forty years turning wrenches in a garage, and his philosophy has always been: if it’s not bleeding heavily, rub some dirt on it.

But last spring, he got this rough, scaly patch on the back of his right hand, right between the thumb and index finger. It kept catching on his pants pocket. Then it started bleeding every time he bumped it.

My mom finally nagged him into going to a dermatologist. The doctor took one look, did a quick scrape, and said it was a basal cell carcinoma. He told my dad he needed to schedule a procedure to have it cut out. He said it would leave a decent-sized divot in his hand.

My dad hated that. He’s a proud guy, and the thought of having a chunk taken out of his hand at his age irritated him more than the actual spot.

He came home, sat in his recliner, and started scrolling on his iPad.

A few days later, I stopped by the house. He was sitting at the kitchen table with a tube of horse paste the apple-flavored stuff from Tractor Supply and a box of Band-Aids.

I asked him what he was doing. He just said, "I read that this stuff works. I ain't letting them carve into my hand if I don't have to."

He put a tiny dab of it on the spot, slapped a bandage over it, and did that twice a day.

For the first two weeks, nothing happened. Then it got angry, red, and crusty. My mom told him to stop, said he was going to make it worse. He ignored her.

About a month later, I was over for Sunday dinner. He held out his hand. The crust had completely fallen off, leaving nothing but smooth, pink, healthy skin.

He went back for his follow-up appointment last week. The doctor looked at his hand, looked at the chart, and just said, "Well, it looks like it healed up just fine."

My dad never told him what he did. He just paid his copay and walked out.

When I asked him why he didn't say anything, he just shrugged. "He wouldn't have believed me anyway. Let’s go get a burger."

That’s my dad. Just a guy in a garage who found a solution the system didn't give him.
