For many businesses, decisions are still made based on experience, assumptions, instinct and sometimes “this is how we've always done it.”
And this is where I think the growing number of data professionals becomes interesting.
Have you noticed it?
Everywhere you look these days, someone is learning SQL.
Someone is building dashboards.
Someone is learning Python.
And somehow, everybody's LinkedIn headline now has “Data Analyst” somewhere in it. 😂
At first, you might look at this and think:
They have expenses.
They have customer information.
They have inventory records.
They have marketing data.
They have financial records.
The data is there.
The bigger question is:
Are they actually using it to make decisions?
“Are there not too many Data Analysts already?”
But I think we're looking at it from the wrong angle.
What if the rise of Data Analysts, Business Analysts and Data Scientists is actually good news for Nigerian businesses?
Think about the average SME.
They have sales data.

Finance knowledge + Data Analytics + Business Understanding
Got a DM from a friend asking me:
“Is it really easy to move from being an Accountant/Finance Manager to a Data Analyst or Business Analyst?”
My honest answer?
Yes. But it still depends on you.
Comments for More...
You need to learn how to extract data, clean it, analyse it, find patterns, and turn those numbers into insights that can help a business make better decisions.
And this is where I think Finance professionals have a huge opportunity.
But e no end there o. 😂
You still need to put your head down and learn the technical side.
SQL.
Excel.
Power BI/Tableau.
And depending on the role, Python.
Coming from Accounting or Finance gives you an advantage.
You already understand financial numbers.
You understand revenue, costs, profit, margins, budgets, variances and how businesses make money.
That knowledge is valuable.
