Political participation is one of the strongest measures of inclusion. Yet, for most persons with disabilities in India, it remains out of reach.
During the Purple Think Tank at @purplefestgoa on “Political Participation for Persons with Disabilities,” moderated by @armanaly, speakers reflected on why this gap persists and what real inclusion should look like.
-Shri. E.T. Basheer (@BasheerEt ) , MP, Malappuram Lok Sabha Constituency, Kerala, spoke of Kerala’s model of embedding disability inclusion into public systems.
-Shri. Subhash Phal Dessai (@SubhashGoa ), Minister of Social Welfare, Goa, called for political reservation from the panchayat level to Parliament.
-Shri Sunil Deodhar (@Sunil_Deodhar ), Former National Secretary of the BJP and Co-incharge of BJP Andhra Pradesh, reflected on the lack of entry points for aspiring leaders with disabilities within political systems.
-Shri. Tushar Kelkar (@HusharTushar ), State President, Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (@bjym_goa ), Goa, spoke of creating accessible polling booths and a disability wing in every political party.
-Prof. Deepak Nathan (@Deepak_TMN ), Assistant Professor at Loyola College and Secretary of the Disabled Wing, @arivalayam , emphasised that persons with disabilities must move from advocacy into politics.
-Zaruhi Batoyan (@Batoyan ), Hon’ble Member of Parliament, Republic of Armenia, shared how lived experience must shape policy.
-Dr. Aman Preet Kaur, Deputy National Lead – CSR, @Bajaj_Finserv , underlined that advocacy must be driven by rights, not charity.
The session closed on a powerful note: India’s democracy will be complete only when persons with disabilities are part of its political voice — contesting, legislating, and leading the change they have long been promised.
