And trying to make refugee students feel safe in US classrooms (which is foundational to their learning) is feeling more and more impossible, because it could happen anywhere
NEW: The missing men in the #KeyBridgeCollapse are from El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras & Mexico, and live in Dundalk & Highlandtown. @justin_fenton & @BaltimoreBanner reporting that the men are in their 30s and 40s w/spouses & children. All of them came to the city for a better life. “They are all hard-working, humble men" @wjz
#MNPSVoices: A lifelong learner, Jorge Katawala realized a dream when he became an MNPS teacher this year at Margaret Allen Middle School. Katawala loves making lessons relatable - and therefore relevant - to his students. https://t.co/RKRMHjOso4
Normalize saying I love you to members of your professional learning communities*
*so I don’t feel so awkward because I accidentally said I love you to my professional learning community 🥴
I ❤️ @MNPS_EL summer school! Discussing government and active citizenship for all, regardless of national origin or immigrant status. This group of students is ready to change the world
MNPS student BOE members expressed themselves at yesterday's Board meeting and gave a voice to their fellow students, many of whom have been active in showing support for, and grieving alongside, the students and families at The Covenant School. https://t.co/UDFHaI5Qj5

We are failing our children. Guns are now the leading cause of death for children in the U.S.
Michelle and I mourn with the students and families of the Covenant School today.
It would be hard to find an EL teacher in the US who isn't familiar with these stories: unaccompanied minors working all night in factories, and trying to keep their eyes open at school in the day. How can we change this? 💔😪 #ellchat#ells https://t.co/dQqrD3HVDs
I think a lot of non-educators actually have no idea how unkind students can be + how much of an emotional load it is to respond to/redirect/reteach inappropriate behavior.
@JohnEarlyMMM is also home to the north side of town’s SIFE program for emerging English Learners. Mrs. Baughn & Mrs. Anderson are excellent resources for engaging classroom strategies, such as these handy Accountable Talk bookmarks! @MNPS_EL
I also really like this graphic by @MatthewAKraft et al looking at school district hiring challenges across TN (pre-pandemic): https://t.co/76hLtWM2Lr
16% of districts said they had too few applicants for PE teachers, while 79% said the same for math teachers:
Cultural diffusion in action!! Our @JohnEarlyMMM#SIFE students demonstrated their knowledge of the Silk Road by “trading” exports from different ancient civilizations. Look at the difference from beginning to end!
NASHVILLE and beyond! The number of people being displaced from their homes around the world is increasing. As these tragedies continue, more and more refugees are coming to Nashville through official US programs.
"But I don't speak Spanish." can no longer be an accepted reason many Ts are not equitably educating English Learners/Heritage Spanish Speakers in classrooms.
A good T speaks Educator = expertise on differentiated instruction, data use,a safe place to learn etc.

Working on our pattern memory, English color naming, and honestly a little bit of rapping skills during my @JohnEarlyMMM#SIFE math class this week! Thanks to @msandersonEL for capturing these… priceless memories (and some of my crazy eyes!) @MNPS_EL
