It began with the gruesome murders of Sheikh Ja'afar Mahmud Adam in Kano and Sheikh Umar Hamza Dan-Maishiyya in Sokoto, both in 2007.

Seven years later, in 2014, Sheikh Muhammad Auwal Albani Zaria was also assassinated in Kaduna.

Today, in 2026, in a similar vein, unknown gunmen killed Sheikh Yahaya Masussuka in Katsina.

This is a very dangerous development in Northern Nigeria. Do not rejoice at these killings. Your favourite cleric is not safe either. None of us is truly safe.

May there be peace in our fatherland, Nigeria, amin. May Allah (SWT) forgive the shortcomings of our departed loved ones, amin.
