Talor Gooch says if Rory completes the Career Slam at The Masters this year, there will be an asterisk next to it:
“If Rory McIlroy goes and completes his [Career] Grand Slam without some of the best players in the world, there’s just going to be an asterisk. It’s just the reality. I think everybody wins whenever the majors figure out a way to get the best players in the world there.”
While this sounds like a controversial take on the face of it, there is a big danger this will happen in the coming years. As it stands, the majority of Masters qualification can only be obtained via the PGA Tour, where a significant number of the best players in the world are literally banned. What happens when players like Bryson DeChambeau or Cameron Smith’s exemptions run out?
If Augusta National doesn’t want to risk becoming a glorified PGA Tour signature event, with a few past champions and amateurs making up the field, they really need to look at this qualifying criteria. It already has the weakest field of any major and it would be a shame if that slipped any further.
