출산하고 집에 돌아왔더니,
아기 방에 시어머니 침대가 놓여 있었어.

분해된 아기 침대는
복도 벽에 세워져 있었고.

친정에서 출산하고 한 달쯤 몸조리한 뒤,
아기를 안고 집에 돌아온 날이었어.

남편이 기저귀 가방을 받아주면서 말했어.

“엄마가 당분간 도와주신대.”

그런데 도와주러 오신 분 짐이 아니었어.

옷장에는 시어머니 옷이 가득했고,
내가 아기랑 함께 쓰려고 준비한 방에는
커다란 침대가 들어와 있었어.

천장에 달아놓은 아기 모빌만 그대로였어.

“아기 침대는 왜 치웠어?”

“엄마도 편하게 주무셔야지.
아기는 우리 방에서 재우면 되잖아.”

“어머니는 언제 돌아가시는데?”

남편이 표정을 굳혔어.

“도와주시겠다는 분한테
오자마자 그런 것부터 물어봐야 해?”

나는 시어머니께 직접 여쭤봤어.

“어머니, 며칠 정도 계실 예정이세요?”

시어머니가 오히려 당황하시더라.

“며칠이라니?
너랑 얘기 다 끝났다던데?”
