@michaelhills8@MidiaPetronilla Those โminor, piffling reformsโ as you call them brought down OโNeillโs government. Clearly Paisley & co saw them as serious issues which is why they attacked NICRA marches.
BTW Why do you keep bringing the Provos in this topic? I thought we were discussing the electoral reforms
@michaelhills8@MidiaPetronilla You may have found it petty but it wasn't petty for the working class people of Derry.
The electoral system should have been sorted decades earlier so let's not marvel at how quickly the legalisation was passed given it's implementation was not. Fresh elections should been held
@michaelhills8@MidiaPetronilla O'Hare referenced people in England with multiple votes to highlight the absurdity of the electoral system. As the report states over 30% of Catholics and 15% of Protestants over the age of 21 had no vote in local elections.
@michaelhills8@MidiaPetronilla There were multiple abuses of the democratic system - gerrymandering being the main one in Derry as you point out.
Regarding the impact of "business vote", I will defer to the comments made by Eugene O'Hare in the original clip who was very well qualified to assess this.
@michaelhills8@MidiaPetronilla It made quite a bit of difference to the gerrymandered people of Derry who had been dominated by the unionist council & who had control over housing, etc.
Here's a link to the actual BBC archive which covered the visit in Jan 1969.

@michaelhills8@MidiaPetronilla The legislation received royal assent in November that year. The first elections held under the revised system of โone person, one voteโ took place in 1973. So effectively there was 4 more years of disenfranchisement for a lot of adults.
@MidiaPetronilla The late Eugene OโHare featured in this clip, eloquently highlighting the absurd injustices of the old system. He represented Ireland in the Chess Olympiad several times and was a local businessman.
@GAHargan InvestNI should have on their website a dashboard showing a list of companies who has received funding, the amount of funding, what the obligations are for those companies, number of new jobs created, location etc. Simple - itโs public money after all.
@FXMC1957 It's a great photo although slightly misleading. It was taken just a few seconds after a free kick. The Belgium players had formed "a wall" for the free kick.
@Comrade_Otoa The first 10 mins of this lecture should be required viewing for all politicians, business leaders etc.
I think it was Gandhi who said "Poverty is the worst form of violence".
@BBCNewsNI Why is InvestNI contributing ยฃ1.5M to a firm which made profits of ยฃ67M last year?
This significantly disadvantages smaller companies who are vying for the same talent.
@ft_content An incisive article - essential reading for CIO & CTOs.
It would also be interesting to calculate the impact poor IT has on customers. I wasted half a day last week due to a mixture of poor IT & badly designed business processes.
@MorbidKnowledge I met Jack back in Derry (his home town) a couple of years ago. He was still going strong then. The photo was taken in Peadar O'Donnell's.
hi @PostOffice
Tried to renew my driving license at a main branch in Reading only to find out that the service has not been available for SEVERAL months!
The staff there have given up trying to contact you to sort this out! Any comments?
