국립고궁박물관 〈백옥영락초롱잠〉에서 모티브를 얻어 의인화로 그려봤습니다. (이 비녀를 비롯한 영친왕 일가 복식 도록은 국립고궁박물관 누리집에서 다운로드받을 수 있어요.)
비녀의 길쭉한 몸체(잠신)가 백옥이라, 옥색 치마저고리로 표현해 보았습니다. 잠신의 가녀리고 곧게 뻗은 느낌은 치맛자락을 당겨 매무새를 잡는 자태로 살려봤어요.
비녀머리(잠두)에 달린 영락 장식은 쪽머리 위에 그대로 올렸습니다. 유물에서 제일 화려한 부분이라, 그림에서도 머리 쪽으로 시선이 가도록 했어요.

이렇게 그려보고 싶은 유물들이 참 많은데... 스케치라도 종종 해봐야겠다는 생각이 드네요 :)

Wŏnhyo (617-686) was one of the most important philosophers and commentators in East Asian Buddhism and the most prolific scholar in Korean Buddhism...

The story goes that Wonhyo and his best friend Uisang were traveling toward China in 661 to study Buddhism more deeply. During their journey through Baekje (Korean kingdom located in southwestern Korea), they were caught in heavy rain and took shelter in what they believed was a cave.

At night, Wonhyo became very thirsty and found a container that he assumed was a gourd filled with water. He drank from it and felt refreshed. The next morning, they discovered the shocking truth that their shelter was actually an ancient tomb filled with human skulls, and the “gourd” had been a skull filled with stagnant rainwater. What had felt pure and refreshing was, in physical reality, something horrifying.

It was at that moment that Wonhyo realized that nothing in the water itself had changed, only his mind’s interpretation of it. That insight led to a direct realization of Yogacara philosophy, often summarized as “mind only,” meaning that experience is shaped entirely by consciousness rather than external objects having fixed meaning. After this realization, he concluded that seeking teachings in China was unnecessary, since truth was not located in distant places or external authority but in understanding the mind itself.

Soon after, Wonhyo left formal monastic life after having an affair with a princess named Yoseok. He chose instead to teach Buddhism as a lay practitioner under the name “Layman of Minor Lineage.” He became known not only for his influential writings and commentaries, but also for an unconventional approach to spreading Buddhist teaching.

Traveling through towns and villages, he used songs and dances as a form of instruction, and is also said to have visited bars and brothels, played the lute, and stayed in the homes of ordinary people. While these actions went against traditional monastic norms, they were later understood as “skillful means,” intended to reach people in whatever circumstances they were in.

Wŏnhyo was one of the most eminent scholar-monks in East Asian history, his extensive literary output runs to over 80 works in 240 fascicles. His most influential commentaries are those on buddha-nature texts like the Vajrasamādhisūtra and Mahāparinirvāṇasūtra. These works became classics widely respected throughout Korea, China and Japan.

Completed in 537 AD during the reign of Byzantine Emperor Justinian I, the Hagia Sophia stood as the world's largest cathedral for nearly 1000 years. Its massive central dome, spanning about 31m (102ft), was an engineering achievement that influenced religious architecture across Europe and the Middle East for centuries.

After the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople in 1453 AD, Sultan Mehmed II converted the building into a mosque. Christian mosaics were plastered over rather than destroyed, allowing many to survive into the modern era. Large roundels bearing the names of Allah, Muhammad, and the first Caliphs were added during 19th Century restorations.

The structure has endured earthquakes, fires, political upheaval, and nearly 1500 years of continuous use. In 1935 it became a museum under the Republic of Turkey, before being reconverted into a mosque in 2020.

The Hagia Sophia's dome rises about 55.6m (182ft) above the floor. When it was completed in the 6th century, contemporaries described it as appearing to float in the air because of the ring of windows at its base, an effect that still impresses visitors today.

The influence of Eurasian nomads in Korea -

It is interesting to study the influence of Eurasian nomads in Korea. In ancient times, people spread from Manchuria and China to the Korean Peninsula. In general, it can be said that the Korean civilization was formed on the basis of a civilization that came from China. But this is not the only reason. The influence of Eurasian nomads reached the Korean Peninsula through the Manchuria. Manchuria was a land dominated by Eurasian nomads.

The origins of the Goguryeo and Baekje kingdoms mentioned in ancient Korean history are linked to the Manchuria. These kingdoms have contributed to the origins of the Korean nation. In 7th Century AD, Korean Peninsula was unified under the rule of the Silla kingdom. The Silla kingdom is generally descended from people who migrated to the Korean Peninsula from China. This indicates that Korean civilization was formed on the foundation of Chinese civilization. However, Korean civilization is not exactly the same as Chinese civilization. This is due to the influence of the aforementioned Goguryeo and Baekje kingdoms. These kingdoms originated in Manchuria and were heavily influenced by the hunter and nomadic peoples of Eurasia.

In general, it seems that hunter and nomadic people who were pushed from Manchuria to the Korean Peninsula laid the foundation for the kingdoms of Goguryeo and Baekje. Just like some groups of Eurasian nomads migrated to Europe. This factor that makes Korean civilization different from Chinese civilization. Since then, Eurasian nomads have continued to influence Korea to varying degrees. When Silla ruled the Korean Peninsula, the kingdom of Balhae existed in Manchuria. This kingdom was a union of the Goguryeo and Mohe peoples.

The Mohe people are the ancestors of the Jurchen people. When the Balhae kingdom collapsed, some of its people migrated to the Korean Peninsula. During the Liao, Jin and Yuan dynasties, Eurasian nomads had a significant influence on Korea. The same was true during the Qing dynasty.

Some modern Korean scholars link the origins of their nation to Eurasian nomads. This is not unreasonable. In general, the decisive factor that made Korean civilization different from Chinese civilization is the influence of Eurasian nomads.

오늘 마지막 오찬에서는 지금까지 사용하고 있던 서명용 펜을 제게 선물로 주셨습니다. 아마도 처음 정상회담때 제가 쓰던 펜을 선물 받은 기억 때문이 아닐까 생각됩니다.

어제 만찬때 골프 얘기를 하며 우리 부부와 골프를 함께 하겠다고 하여 아내가 손가락 걸고 약속을 받았는데,
오늘 오찬후 헤어지면서 다시 골프를 꼭 함께 하자고 하셨습니다. 지나가는 말인줄 알았는데 준비를 해야할 것 같습니다.

각별히 관심 가져주신 트럼프 대통령님께 감사드립니다.
한미관계는 단단하고 영원합니다.
