The justifications shift. The pattern doesn't.
Closing out our phase 2 evictions series with one question:
"what would it look like to design cities that absorb rather than displace?"

Gikomba wasn't just demolished, it exposed a deeper fault line in how we plan our cities.

63 years of Madaraka. ๐ฐ๐ช
Self-governance was a promise - not just of political freedom, but of a state that shows up for its people. That builds cities where everyone belongs. That protects the most vulnerable, not just in declarations, but in practice.

Last year (2025), together with you, we stood beside marginalized urban communities facing forced eviction and displacement โ and your solidarity mattered.
As we celebrate WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY 2025, let's stand for environmental justice in every corner.
Clear Air, safe water, and green spaces are not a privilege, but a right for all.

The attainment of self rule is not just a historical milestone, but also a reminder of the power we have to create a more just and equitable urban society for all.

Take a look at Aisha's story -a Mathare resident- as she narrates her story under the "My Eviction Story" series.
Aisha is loud and clear. The Ghetto is Burning, and So Are Lives.
HOME WAS HERE: MEMORY, LOSS AND THE RIGHT TO CITY
This is Joshua Mutisoโs recollection of his loss of home, a narrative that lends voice to the eviction stories of many residents in Nairobiโs informal settlements.
@Wanavijiji_sdi Aaai Humphrey; the county did not evict people? I beg to disagree. Evictions is not just about who brings the bulldozers, it is also about who is complicit to it
@Wanavijiji_sdi What do you mean is the community prepared???How about tune that question to how the city has prepared itself to prevent disproportionate impacts on the slums. We continue to overburden communities and romanticize they systems that put them in vulnerability in the first place!
As Muturi watched recurrent floods tearing through homes in Mathare, washing away memories, he couldn't help but question who must be held accountable. Floods to the right, #evictions to the left ๐๏ธ๐ธ. When shall our cities shift from reactive demolitions to proactive resilience?
WHEN THE RIVER RECLAIMS WHAT WAS ALWAYS ITS OWNโฆ
In Mathare, a house stood, until it didnโt. The floodwaters came like an uninvited guest, sweeping away homes, memories, and livelihoods. For some, the flood was the final blow.
@GhettoRadio895@Browngalnessa@abonokohdeh Ata kama ni Christmas nimeshangaa sana na hizi stori za ghetto! What a dark and grim tactic used to displace watu wa mtaa in the name of โdevelopment.โ

Before tingatingas (bulldozers), did you know how forced evictions manifested decades ago?
Meet Kawira, a mother, a long-lived resident of Nairobiโs third-largest informal settlement, who has experienced and contested different waves of forceful evictions across decades.
