Kanwal Matharu, MD, of @UIowaEye provides quality eye care for global underserved populations. "Iowa has been one of the best educational institutions, not only for ophthalmology but also in terms of our eye banking and just the ethos here," he says. https://t.co/MbI1dTsNzh
It’s a great time of year to ask yourself “when was the last time the incubator intake vent was cleaned?” (if you have to ask then it’s time to clean it)
This has been a really fun side project that has taught us a lot about an interesting family of plants!! Hopefully this little guy will be catching flies soon!
Experimenting with a different kind of cloning in the lab....plants!! We attempted to propagate a cape sundew through cuttings. First, we cut leaves off this mother plant (shown here flowering)...
PS. Although the ad describes an anti-fungal development project, this is still the correct link to apply!! Cell culture and animal handling experience preferred but not required.
I am hiring a research assistant to work on elucidating mechanisms of cerebral pathogenesis using murine and cell culture models. If you're interested, apply here before aug 16th: https://t.co/fXVXjHrLpx. Please share this link if you know of people who may be interested!
In a monumental effort, my research assistant completed a primary screen of 150,000 compounds!! There’s still a LOT of work to be done but in an academic setting with limited automation, this is quite the feat!!!
There is still a lot of work to do on this compound (and the many others we have identified in our screen which is up to ~1000K now!!) but we are excited to have some potential candidates to work with moving forward!
I almost forgot to post our most recent paper published in mSpectrum! We completed a screen of ~50K compounds and characterized one of our tops hits, a pyrimidine-based compound, which disrupts ER function in A. fumigatus!

It has been a whirlwind of a month but the Beattie lab has officially moved (across the hall)!! We are excited to grow into our new space and even more excited that the move is over now...
@ImperfectFunGuy Hey Matt, are there certain regions where the infected cicadas will be? We have a brood emerging in Iowa….curious if we might have some infected here?
Why shouldn't we rely on a limited number of reference strains to study fungal pathogens? My thoughts in this month's @NatureRevMicro Journal Club, featuring work by @caitlinkowa @BeattieLab@cramer_lab.
