Black Mirror: It's Closer Than You Think
One of the most memorable scenes in Black Mirror's “Nosedive” is that Lacie's digital social ranking isn't simply a reflection of how other people see her. It determines what she can access.
When her score drops, she finds that it can affect everything from the car she can rent to whether she can get on a flight.
The episode raises a very real question about what happens when digital systems become the gateway to everyday life. The more aspects of our lives depend on a single digital infrastructure, the more important it becomes to have alternatives when that system isn't available — or when we don't want to participate in it.
That is part of the reason cash matters. Digital payments are convenient, but they shouldn't have to be the only way we can transact. Cash gives people another option that doesn't depend on a digital account, a payment network or a particular technology.
We don't need to reject digital payments to recognise the value of keeping cash. The important thing is making sure that convenience doesn't eventually become the removal of choice.
Cash is one of the few alternatives we still have, and keeping it available means keeping that choice available.

I can’t believe this. I am so sad. Social media is so strange; it allows us to develop relationships & little bonds with people we’ve never met in real life, & we get so used to seeing their thoughts each day, & having little interactions - over time these become real friendships. So many of us have felt so isolated in our lives in today’s world - a world so fractured & under so much stress- that X has become perhaps the only place we can freely & openly express ourselves & connect with other like-minded individuals. These little interactions become meaningful. Krissy was especially delightful because she brought a levity with her humor. She was warm & caring, while also hilariously witty. I will miss her, & miss seeing her “Everything makes me think of @UnmitigatedAss ….” posts. Rest in peace Krissy, & I will keep your family in my prayers. ❤️🐱
