Congress MP Shashi Tharoor raises a very valid point as the national capital has been turned into a fortress to prevent a protest- “One is entitled to ask where this extraordinary manpower and urgency disappear when women in our capital need protection.”
I returned to the national capital after 2 am and have rarely seen anything like what Delhi is witnessing now, with checkpoints every few hundred metres, concrete barriers and spike strips laid across our roads, a war-like deployment of 22,000 police and paramilitary across the city, 250 trains cancelled and 45 metro stations closed, and reports of young people being detained from their own homes and the streets in and around Delhi -- all to prevent citizens from peacefully raising questions about the integrity of our elections. Most regressive (as well as repressive) is the suspension of the internet in the heart of the national capital.
Freedom of movement stands completely shackled. Jantar Mantar was designated precisely so that citizens could voice dissent in the centre of Delhi, and today even the roads leading to it have been declared out of bounds. One is entitled to ask where this extraordinary manpower and urgency disappear when women in our capital need protection.
Those detained will hvre to be released .And if the protesters simply return on Monday, will the authorities lock down the national capital all over again? Our GenZ deserves better than an undeclared Emer-GenZ.
A government confident in the fairness of its elections would welcome questions about them, whereas one that turns its capital into a fortress to avoid them only deepens the very suspicions it seeks to suppress. The government should provide answers, not lathis; expression, not repression.
Barricades will do nothing to restore faith in the Election Commission, and the sooner it answers the public's questions, the sooner calm will be restored. The strength of a democracy is measured by how it treats those who question its working, and by that measure, what we have seen today is utterly shameful and unconscionable.

Supreme Court directs that there shall be “no complete prohibition” on the movement of metro trains, asking authorities to allow metro and other railway services to operate in a suitably regulated manner ahead of the October 10 protests.
Supreme Court also directs authorities to give wide publicity to their decision to minimise inconvenience to commuters, keeping in mind the principle of proportionality.
#WATCH | Sonipat, Haryana: On the cancellation of trains, Union Minister Chirag Paswan says, "These are the youth of India—nothing can stop them. To those attempting to spread such misconceptions, I ask: how many trains can anyone really stop? How much connectivity can be blocked? How many roads can be jammed? These are India's youth; they possess the capacity to show the world the way—just as previous generations have done—and so, nothing can hold them back."

*****Can’t recall such a divisive environment in our country over Election Commission in the past 3 decades of professional journalism.
No government in india has ever made such massive security arrangements and imposed embargoes to quell a students protest, such as the one we see now.
Not even when anti-reservation protests were at its peak in 1990.
I hope the intelligence inputs are sound, if the govt anticipates large-scale violence, organised by protesting students.
But if not, then this is a very serious matter, with major ramifications.
Something from yesterday still doesn’t sit right with me.
Rahul Gandhi is a Z+ protectee. Armed CRPF personnel are deployed specifically for his proximate security.
Yet we watched Delhi Police Constables physically take him away while security detail stepped back.
We’ve seen Centre, state confrontations elsewhere where central security personnel assert the protectee’s security perimeter.
So I genuinely want to understand:
Who decides when Z+ steps in, and when Z+ steps back?
And when Delhi Police itself is taking physical control of the person they are supposed to protect, who is responsible for ensuring that nothing happens to him?
Because Z+ security cannot become Z+ everywhere, minus Delhi.
There is a protocol here. The public deserves to know how it works.
#WATCH | On reports of Iran dismissing his claim of them seeking a ceasefire, US President Donald Trump says, "...They won't tell the public... I just put out the truth about their disinformation... They said they attacked the USS Abraham Lincoln... It was never attacked. It was never burning... I didn’t realise this before we started, but Iran is known for a lot of fake news. They deal with our fake news. And I actually think it's pretty criminal because our media companies, which have no credibility whatsoever, are putting out information that they know is false. It’s a very dangerous thing for the country. I think they could be in serious jeopardy."

It's fucked up.
In a half decent democracy, Yogi Adityanath would've been sacked.
But the embarrassment of a country that we are, his popularity would probably rise.
