An article published on April 7 mistakenly claimed that the Clapham chemical attacker Abdul Ezedi had been supported by the Church of England, and that this enabled him to 'beat the system'. We accept that Mr Ezedi is not known to have had any connections with the Church of England and apologise for the error.
Bishop Alan was never afraid to stand up for those on the margins, those that felt they were being ignored by the church. He was a man of prophetic spirit, reaching out where he saw injustice and speaking up when he witnessed the abuse of power.
I was deeply saddened to hear of his death today. He was approaching retirement and the sudden loss will be a shock to his family, the diocese of Oxford and the wider church.
He leaves behind a huge gap and an important legacy. We have much to learn from his life and his courage.
In our pain, it is Jesus that draws near and mourns with us. I hold Bishop Alan’s whole family, especially Lucy, in my prayers.
May he rest in peace and rise in glory.
