"I'm alarmed by the rising tensions between Ethiopia & Eritrea. Peace & diplomacy must prevail over conflict & instability. I urge leaders to adhere to the Pretoria Peace Agreement. Hostilities in the Horn of Africa will only lead to further regional suffering."- @SenatorShaheen
Weekly press release from Salsay Weyane Tigray
Displacing thousands more Tigrayans has to stop and return of IDPs has to begin!
Renewed displacement of thousands of Tigrayans in recent months, further exacerbating the existing humanitarian crisis.
But why does this government official think the issue is only related to illegal mining? Do we have experts in Tigray who study the effects of gold mining regardless of legality of miners?
According to this data from @ethiotelecom, there are 74.6 million subscribes in Ethiopia. That makes Amhara's percentage 22% without making other assumptions.

Restoring the constitutional order is a precondition for peace.
This includes repatriating #Amhara settlers recently brought in to facilitate annexation.
Without this, #IDPs cannot be safely returned, as the settlers occupy houses & land that belong to them.

In-depth: Famine haunts #Tigray, again; weak response, conflicts and drought threaten millions elsewhere in #Ethiopia
https://t.co/9VvGVW68FE
Recent headlines about Ethiopia reveal a grim reality: hundreds have already succumbed to #hunger, while millions are on the brink of the same fate. At the national level, 6.6 million individuals requiring emergency food assistance due to the effects of the drought have been identified thus far. Out of these, four million are situated in the northern part of the country.
In Tigray alone, close to 400 people, including 25 children, perished from starvation in a single month. The gravity of the situation draws parallels to the catastrophic #famine of the mid-1980s, with officials warning of imminent "starvation and death."
In the #Amhara region, the ongoing conflict exacerbates the crisis. In November 2023, over 20 individuals succumbed to starvation in the #Waghimra and #North_Gondar zones, with livestock casualties exceeding 85,000. Over 1.8 million people urgently require assistance.
Human stories underscore the urgency. Sesen Siyum, a mother of two, struggles to provide amidst war and drought. Formerly self-reliant, she now fears for her children's survival. Similarly, Alemne Abebe, from #Irob, mourns deaths from starvation, exacerbated by isolation and conflict.
Despite pleas, the federal government denies starvation-related deaths, attributing reports to "hidden agendas." Such claims undermine the urgent need for aid. The lack of coordination exacerbates the crisis, with disparities in reported victims and aid delivery. In the face of denial and a lack of coordination, millions of individuals, like Sesen and Alemne, are teetering on the brink of starvation and death. Without a significant improvement in the crisis response, their lives hang in the balance.
🚨A week ago, our op-ed called for global action to stop the unfolding #TigrayFamine to prevent deaths & morbidity. Sadly, reports of preventable deaths from starvation are continuing. Over a million are under such threat! @antonioguterres@BradSherman@MikeHammerUSA@Yara_M_Asi
