Today came hard news for Belarusians.
In Ukraine, fighting for liberation of 🇺🇦 & freedom of Belarus, fighters of @belwarriors & Pahonia died. I express my sincere condolences to families of the fallen in battle. It’s our duty to make their dreams of free Belarus come true
Today free Belarusian media, democratic forces and NGOs run a marathon of solidarity with political prisoners in #Belarus. Anyone outside Belarus can make a donation and spread the word. Because we care

Who is Dzmitry #Shautsou — scandalous head of #RedCross in Belarus, who visits the occupied territories of #Ukraine wearing the Z-symbol and does not hide his participation in the transfer of Ukrainian children.

🆕 In a new @EP_ForeignAff report, prepared by @petras_petras, MEPs express great concern over Belarus' subordination to Moscow.
They also want the @IntlCrimCourt to consider an arrest warrant for dictator Aliaksandr Lukashenka.

Ales Pushkin continued to paint even behind the bars. Here's some of the examples.
Unfortunately, we will never see new pieces of art from Ales again.

It’s not the first scandal with Shautsou: he made homophobic statements in 2022, in 2020, during the falsificated elections in #Belarus, he was the head of the electoral commission of Minsk.

Could you guess who is that man with the Russian Z-symbol? It’s the head of Belarusian #RedCross Dzmitry Shautsou. He visited territories of #Ukraine that were temporarily occupied by #Russia.
Heartbroken to learn that Belarusian artist & political prisoner Ales Pushkin died last night. Although his family does not yet know the details, it is clear that he has become yet another tragic victim of Lukashenka's regime. I offer my deepest condolences to his wife & family.
Belarus has lost one of its most talented & fearless sons. Ales Pushkin was the embodiment of the indomitable spirit of the Belarusian people. He died as a political prisoner of the regime & the responsibility lies with his jailor, Lukashenka & his cronies.
Ales used his art to fight for freedom & build a new Belarus without tyranny. He dreamed of a free & democratic Belarus. Now we must continue his work & make his dream come true.
Dictators fear artists. Why? Because they have the power to express thoughts & ideas that challenge the regime's lies. They hold a mirror to the world, one that tyrants dread to look into.
I hope that this tragedy will be a wake-up call to the world. How many more people must die behind bars? I call for a strong international reaction to this death & the ongoing inhuman treatment of political prisoners.
Today, my thoughts are with Ales' relatives & friends. Their loss is also our loss - this is a true tragedy for every Belarusian.
The memory of Ales & his art will remain with us forever.
Today, the #Belarus regime has signed an agreement with Russia on the deployment of nuclear weapons. It would not only endanger the lives of Belarusians but also create a new threat against Ukraine & all of Europe.
Even when they are talking about tactical nuclear weapons, most of them are still as powerful as the atomic bomb that killed 140,000 people in Hiroshima. The radioactive fallout would be much worse than the contamination that Belarusians experienced after the 1986 Chornobyl disaster.
Last week, as G7 leaders gathered in Hiroshima, I urged the world to take action against this dangerous escalation. If we don’t react, then other dictators with nuclear ambitions will feel encouraged to raise the stakes. We can’t play this game, because there is only one outcome; nuclear devastation.
Since the beginning of the Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Putin has used his nuclear arsenal to intimidate the world. As the Russian army has proven ineffective, he is playing the last card that he has.
But these threats didn’t stop the democratic world from supporting Ukraine in the fight for freedom. And we can’t let this latest piece of nuclear blackmail stop us.
The deployment of any kind of nuclear weapons in Belarus is not only a violation of international commitments such as the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and the Budapest Memorandum of 1994. It also violates our non-nuclear status under the Constitution & the will of the Belarusian people. It will make Belarusians hostages to Russian imperial ambitions.
It is not too late, but time is running out. I ask our partners & allies to take firm steps to prevent the deployment of nuclear weapons in Belarus. I ask you to consider preventive sanctions on Russia & Lukashenka’s regime. They must know that if the deployment happens – the dictators will face devastating consequences.
Belarusians deserve to live in a free, democratic & safe country. We all deserve to live in a free & safe Europe. Let’s make this come true.
My heartfelt gratitude to all representatives of embassies & others who took part in today's solidarity action in Vilnius reading the names of political prisoners. Behind every name is a family in pain. They also need our solidarity.

Heartbroken by the news that political prisoner Mikalai Klimovich died in the penal colony. The 61-year-old was sentenced to prison for a caricature of Lukashenka, despite having a serious heart problem. If we don't get urgent medical help to political prisoners, more will die.
We welcome this decision of the PACE to recognise Lukashenka an accomplice in deportations and forcible transfers of Ukrainian children from the occupied territories of Ukraine. It means Lukashenka is also responsible for the genocide and has to face trial.
It is confirmed that @viktar_babaryka is in the hospital in Novopolotsk. There are no details about his condition yet. We know that political prisoners are tortured & beaten every day. Viktar Babaryka was a main contender in the 2020 election before his arrest. #ShowViktarAlive

Today I sent a letter calling on the @UN Security Council to take action to stop the deployment of Russian nuclear weapons in Belarus.
We need adequate & severe sanctions against the regimes of Lukashenka & Putin as threats to int'l peace and security.
I support the call for Russia to be stripped of UNSC permanent member status.
Excerpts from my letter to UNSC:
We are deeply concerned that the Russian state that has repeatedly demonstrated its aggressive behavior towards our neighbors and far beyond, that has systematically disregarded its obligations under international law and its special responsibility as the permanent UNSC member, could launch a nuclear attack from the territory of Belarus which had greatly suffered the Chernobyl consequences and has no control over these weapons.
This negative development confirms that we were correct in numerous warnings that Lukashenka is a growing threat to international peace and security. It also confirms that Belarus has an essential role and place for the regional security.
Therefore, it is evident that “wait and see” is not a feasible approach. This deployment must be prevented, and the action must start here, at the Security Council, the body that the UN Charter set up “to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war”.
We urge the international community to demand from Russia to stop this threatening deployment and impose adequate and severe sanctions on the regimes of Lukashenka and Putin as outright threats to international peace and security.
We also urge the world to demand the withdrawal of the Russian military from Belarus and to cease Belarus' participation in the Russian aggression against Ukraine.
Finally, we side with the demand of Ukraine to strip the Russian Federation of the UNSC permanent member status. This should be just one of many acts in holding Russia accountable for its crime of aggression and war crimes in Ukraine and for repeatedly failing to meet its special responsibility in this Security Council.
I want to note that Putin announced the deployment of nuclear weapons on foreign territory in passing as if it were the opening of another tractor factory in some Russian province. This clearly shows his perception of Belarus’ sovereignty as his backyard.
Moreover, his interview was released on March 25, when Belarusians mark Freedom Day – the beginning of a modern Belarusian state in 1918. But this deliberate coincidence is also a wide miss by Putin.
Independence and sovereignty are the ultimate values for Belarusians, and we will not tolerate uninvited military presence on our land.
