CONVICTED | Jodie Pitts, 30, and Daniel Keenan, 34, from #Wednesbury, #Sandwell, #WestMidlands- starved a pair of Rottweilers until one died while the other was emaciated and weak with hunger.
Sentencing | 18-month community order; £664 each in fines and charges. Banned from owning animals for 20 years.
The RSPCA were contacted by a vet who had euthanised the couple's severely emaciated Rottweiler named Pandora and was concerned about other dogs in their care.
RSPCA animal rescue officer Ash Moore visited the pair's home in Coronation Road where they discovered a visibly starved ten-month-old Rottweiler called Lola.
The distressed dog was transported to a vet and found to weigh just 13.8kg. She was emaciated with marked muscle wastage and weakness when walking. While at the vets she was scavenging around the room for food. Blood test confirmed she was malnourished.
Officer Moore said: “She was extremely underweight with her full skeletal structure clearly visible, she also had indentations in her head that normally signifies being underweight severely.
"I asked [Pitts and Keenan] if she had been to a vet at all and they explained that she had only been for her vaccinations when she was much younger.
"Lola was visibly weak on her hind legs; they were shaking and were not moving as you would typically see as if the dog was struggling to hold her own weight. I was concerned for Lola and due to the situation with Pandora."
Fed a proper diet Lola's condition soon improved. Happily, she went on to make a full recovery and has been rehomed by the RSPCA.
Pitts and Keenan admitted two animal welfare offences, following a prosecution by the RSPCA and were sentenced on 30 September 2024.

It's believed the owner called the vet to check the price to put her to sleep but then just dumped her. Do you recognise her or have any information?
The dog, who had lost the use of her back legs was abandoned on the bank of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal in Burnley. The black and tan female dog was discovered by a member of the public and taken to a local veterinary practice where a scan for a microchip revealed she was called Coco.
An examination found she had urine scalding on her stomach and was unable to use her back legs or toilet independently.
The RSPCA was alerted about the incident after Coco was discovered on the bank of the canal near the Finsley Gate Tesco Extra store at about 1pm on Monday 2 September.
The charity has been told that someone had called the practice and was informed how much it would cost to have her euthanised, but she was never brought in.
Attempts to contact the owner registered on Coco’s microchip were unsuccessful, and vets said her welfare was severely compromised and they believed it was the kindest option to put her to sleep.
RSPCA officers have spent the past month making enquiries and speaking to neighbours in the Burnley Lane area, where Coco’s owner is believed to have lived, but it is understood they have moved away.
The charity is now asking the public to get in touch if they recognise her or have any information which could help the investigation.
Kelly Nix, an animal rescue officer, said: “We’re extremely concerned about the very poor condition that Coco was in when she was found, and we’d like to thank the veterinary team and the member of the public who stopped and ensured she got the help she needed as quickly as possible.
"We believe she was abandoned on the canal because her owners couldn’t, or didn’t want to pay for her to be humanely put to sleep.
"It’s very sad, and completely unnecessary, to see pets left in situations like this. It’s the responsibility of us all to show kindness and compassion to all animals and that includes doing the right thing by them when they become poorly and need veterinary help.”
The RSPCA is asking anyone with information to contact its appeals line on 0300 123 8018, quoting incident number 01344248.

On December 13, 2023, RSPCA officers attended Brown’s address on a tip-off and found her two-year-old female bull breed dog, Stone, in an emaciated condition and weak with starvation.
Animal Rescue Officer Sidonie Smith, who attended, said: “Stone was severely emaciated and had pressure sores all over her rear end. Her paws were red and sore, with long claws and she also had scabs on her ears.
“She was very subdued and just stayed in a sitting position the whole time I was in the flat. When I had asked the defendant how her dog came to be so underweight she stated it was not her dog and that her son had brought it home a few months ago.
“She said she’d been trying every day to get her registered at a vets because she wasn’t putting on weight. I asked why, if she was worried about the dog, and if she couldn’t get through to a vet, she didn’t just walk into a practice.
“On the way back to my vehicle Stone struggled to walk and fell a few times on her front legs. She seemed very weak and she was shaking.”
Stone was seized and admitted to Finsbury Park Animal Hospital.
Vets said she weighed just 13.05kgs and scored one out of a nine on a body condition scale.
The vet said her condition was the result of starvation rather than underlying disease.
Brown was later charged with causing unnecessary suffering to Stone by failing to investigate her loss of weight and poor body condition.
In mitigation it was said on Brown’s behalf that she did her “incompetent best” for the dog.
Stone has since made a good recovery and has more than doubled in weight.
She is currently being cared for at RSPCA-approved private boarding kennels in Kent and the charity said they will now try to find her a loving new home.
Speaking after the sentencing, Inspector Beaman said: “The defendant had enough time to address Stone’s weight loss. If she was really struggling to feed the dog properly then she could have sought help from the RSPCA’s foodbank scheme or at one of our local branches.
“Stone’s weight loss was so concerning that had the defendant just walked into a local vets the dog would have been seen and treated.”
