Gracias.”
Benghazi cost four American lives at a single compound, and Congress gave it ten investigations and two years of televised fury. Beirut in 1983 produced a commission within weeks, and Pearl Harbor had its inquiry inside eleven days. That is how a serious country treats a military disaster.
This week the Pentagon's own inspector general confirmed that Iran has damaged or destroyed hundreds of buildings at American bases in eight countries, along with dozens of aircraft. Neither Vietnam, Iraq nor Afghanistan ever saw the American footprint across a whole region hammered at once, and the public only learned of it because soldiers leaked photographs while Hegseth shrugged about the occasional "squirter."
General Caine warned before the first bomb fell that stockpiles and defences were not ready. Hegseth, a former television host, has since fired or blocked more than eighty generals and admirals, so the war is being run with the adults removed from the building.
When a Republican congressman filed eight articles of impeachment this week, the Speaker sent the House home early rather than allow a vote.

As the trade war with Washington escalates, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is quietly examining whether Canada could become an associate member of the European Union, according to the Wall Street Journal. A G7 economy on the far side of the Atlantic is asking how close it can get to Brussels, and that alone tells you which way the wind is blowing.
It fits a wider pattern. Georgia and Armenia are edging toward the European single market, and nearly every Eastern European country that once sat inside the Soviet orbit has already made the same choice.
Moscow spends billions bribing leaders into unpopular decisions designed to drag those countries back out of Europe's reach, and it keeps losing.
Now the current has reached the Americas. Canada is exploring associate status while the Mercosur bloc has tied its trade future to the EU.
Washington and Moscow push, Europe simply pulls, and pulling is the stronger force.

Donald Trump stood on the fairway of his own golf course in Ireland on Sunday and informed the world that the diesel crisis "isn't done by the Middle East." It is, he says, Zelenskyy's fault for hitting Russian refineries. This will come as news to the tankers idling outside the Strait of Hormuz, which was open for business before February, was briefly reopened in June, and has been effectively shut again since July, with traffic down to a trickle under naval escort.
That is the shortage. A fifth of the world's seaborne oil, a tenth of its diesel and a fifth of its jet fuel used to pass through that strait. American diesel hit a record above six dollars a gallon on Friday, and it did so because a war Trump started ended with Tehran holding the key to the Gulf, not because a Ukrainian drone found a tank farm in Krasnodar.
The whole world watched the United States go into Iran and come out with a ceasefire, a broken memorandum and a closed strait, the most humiliating result in the history of American power. Rather than admit it, the president asks the country being bombed every night to stop fighting back, so that Russia can sell more diesel and he can survive November.

My Lord.
@JoeBiden, 83 years old, battling Stage 4 cancer that has spread to his bones, stood for HOURS alongside @DrBiden as the names of 9/11 victims were read.
Donald Trump fell asleep at the 9/11 event at the Pentagon.
One showed respect despite his pain. The other couldn't even stay awake.
Trump is an embarrassment to the nation and the office he holds.
Really says it all.
The Man Who Went Bust Running a Casino Is Now Running the House
On Friday, Donald Trump told the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates or he would simply stop trading with every country America runs a deficit with, which is most of the planet. That is not trade policy, that is a man threatening to hold his breath until the economy turns blue. So I decided to go back and read up on the one business where the odds are literally rigged in the owner's favour, and I ended up sitting there muttering that this was completely mad.
In 1990 he opened the Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, called it the eighth wonder of the world, and paid for it with 675 million dollars of junk bonds at 14 percent interest. It was bankrupt within a year. He had built it a mile from his own Trump Plaza and Trump Castle, so the new casino ate the old ones, whose takings dropped by 58 million dollars, and both followed him into Chapter 11 in 1992. The parent company went bust in 2004, again in 2009 and again in 2014, six casino bankruptcies in all. New Jersey regulators had warned back in 1990 that a complete collapse of the Trump Organization was not out of the question. His response, eventually, was to sue the surviving casinos for still carrying his name.
Then I went further back. His Wharton marketing professor, William T. Kelley, told a close friend repeatedly over thirty years that Trump was the dumbest student he ever had, a man who arrived convinced he already knew everything. Classmates remembered someone who could not be bothered to prepare.
There is a word for what happens when people like this end up in charge, and it is being used more and more openly now. The word is kakistocracy, from the Greek kakistos, meaning the worst, and it describes a state governed by its least qualified and least scrupulous citizens. It is not a system anyone designs. It is what you get when loyalty outranks competence, when the man at the top rewards flattery and punishes expertise, and when the people who actually know how a central bank or a supply chain works are shown the door. Look at the cabinet, look at who was fired for telling the truth, and then tell me the word is unfair.
And there is the red thread. Borrow at ruinous rates, build something that undermines what you already own, blame everyone else and announce that the future looks very good. In Atlantic City the bondholders paid. Now the trade deficit has jumped 24 percent in a month and his answer is an embargo on America's own customers. He is not running a country. He is running the Taj Mahal, and this time we are the bondholders.

🇳🇱 The Dutch just did something central banks only do when they’ve quietly stopped believing the official story.
Eighty-six tonnes of gold, hauled out of New York and parked in London, because Amsterdam decided the safest place for its national reserves is no longer America. That is a vote of no confidence.
Officially it is about tradability. Unofficially it is about trust, and trust in Washington has never sat this low.
When a NATO founding member starts treating the world’s reserve currency’s own backyard as a liability rather than a safe haven, something structural has cracked. Tariff wars with Canada, a foreign policy that lurches by tweet, and an administration that governs like a reality show finale have made even Haiti look like the more stable bet.
Gold does not do sentiment. It simply moves toward safety, and away from Trump’s circus of amateurs.

A heart attack leaves a scar the body cannot fix. Dead muscle turns to stiff connective tissue, and that scar slowly drags patients toward heart failure or a transplant list. Medicine restores blood flow and manages symptoms, but regeneration has remained out of reach.
Enter Pilar Ferrer, a 25-year-old Argentinian biologist. Her doctoral work at Universidad Favaloro asked a simple question: could amniotic membrane, a placental tissue already prized for healing burns, do the same for hearts?
Working with Argentina’s amniotic tissue bank, she turned it into an injectable, cell-free gel, and when public funding dried up she founded the startup Amnova Biotech to keep going.
Injected into the damaged zone, the gel acts as a scaffold coaxing healthy cells to rebuild. In sheep it shrank the infarct and improved pumping within a month. Human trials are slated for around 2028.

This is a reminder of "Russian historical lands" that Putin speaks so much about. There is, however, a mistake in this picture. In 1471, it was not Russia, it was Moskovia.
Rus or Ruthenia had its center in Kyiv, modern Ukraine. And "Rossia" is just a Greek spelling of "Rus" used by the Emperor of Byzantium in 10th century. Yes, you read it right "Rossia" is an ancient name of Ukraine in Greek language.
In 13th century, the Pope was addressing Danylo of Kyiv as "King of Rus", while Alexander Nevsky (the ruler of Moskovia) was just "Duke of Suzdal".
Officially, the Tsardom of Moskovia was renamed to Russian Empire in 1721, after taking over Rus (Ukraine).
So Rus (now Ukraine) existed long before Moskovy (now Russia). Moskovy is a split off, not the other way around.
All the above should not matter today, there are internationally recognized borders, and Ukraine is not going to claim its ancient lands and restore our kingdom of Rus, because we are not nuts and we live today. But Putin wants to raise the dead in his delirium, hoping they will help him. They won't, especially if we know his stories are mostly fake.
Today, Trump's America is saying no to everything that actually made America great. No to Europe. No to Ukraine. No to Canada. No to NATO. This is the geopolitical equivalent of a lottery winner tracking down the man who sold him the ticket and punching him.
The winnings, for the record: the UN, NATO, world trade in dollars, the petrodollar. All of it payment for showing up in 1941. Our new wargame deletes the showing up, puts Trump in Roosevelt's chair, and watches every one of those prizes go to somebody else.
And while Washington congratulates itself on the savings, the world has started signing. Canada and the EU signed a defence partnership in 2025. In February 2026, Canada walked into SAFE, Europe's 150 billion euro rearmament fund, as its first non-European member. Britain, Japan, South Korea, India and Australia have their own pacts with Brussels. Not one carries an American signature. Nobody asked for one.
The bill, when it lands, will be counted in trillions. Lost trade, lost dollar premium, lost contracts, lost talent. Hegemony has no notice period. It just leaves.
As large as last time. Possibly larger. Link below.

A Gentle Reminder. Buy European.
The United States elected Donald Trump, and his administration has spent every day since treating Europe not as an ally but as a target. It taxes our exports, mocks our democracies from our own stages, and cheers on the parties whose stated ambition is to tear the European Union apart. A leaked group chat gave us the honest version, where the American Secretary of Defense described his loathing of European free-loading as pathetic. That is what they say when they think the microphone is off. The tariffs are simply what they do when it is on.
So let Europe answer in the only language Washington genuinely respects, which is money.
Millions of Canadians already do it. They turn the package over before it reaches the basket, and if it says Made in USA it stays on the shelf. Seven hundred million Europeans can do the same thing without a single new law, treaty or summit communiqué.
You vote once every four years. You shop several times a week. Do the arithmetic on which one Washington actually feels.
On top of idiots like Trump and others with their "drill, baby, drill" Thursday 𝒂𝒍𝒔𝒐 recorded the most commercial flights 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 in one day

We really are burning up the planet
Dalia Grybauskaitė, former President of Lithuania:
I first met Putin in Helsinki in 2010. For us, the gas price from Russia was a huge question.
We fully depended on gas supplies from Russia. And we had been paying about 30–40% more than Germany was paying, for example.
For a neighboring country where the pipelines are some 2,000 km closer, we were paying so much.
During the meeting, Putin read me a list of what Lithuania was supposed to do, and it was clear to me that it was about obedience, about surrendering.
It was clear to me that with countries neighboring Russia, you either kneel or you are the enemy, and you have nothing in between.
Of course, I was not able to accept these requests. After this meeting, I understood that Lithuania needed to get rid of its dependency on energy from Russia.
We moved very quickly to build an LNG terminal. We were the first in Europe to do this at that time. By the end of 2014, we had an LNG terminal.
This allowed us to fully cut our dependency on Russian gas and Gazprom in Lithuania, and even to help our neighbors in Latvia and Estonia.
