Happy 250th, America! 🇺🇸

Two and a half centuries ago, a bold idea took root: that people could govern themselves, that liberty was worth fighting for, and that a nation could be built on the promise of freedom and opportunity for all. Today we celebrate 250 years of that promise. America is a story written by its people. The dreamers, builders, and everyday citizens who believed in something bigger than themselves.

As I sit here on this glorious 14th Day of June, being a self-proclaimed historian, I am reflecting on the significance and importance of the 251st birthday of the United States Army and what George Washington established, unwittingly, as the catalyst for Flag Day to coincide with the Army's birthday, a year before we became a declared independent nation.

"When the American Revolution broke out in 1775, the colonists weren’t fighting united under a single flag. Instead, most regiments participating in the war for independence against the British fought under their own flags. In June of 1775, the Second Continental Congress met in Philadelphia to create the Continental Army—a unified colonial fighting force—with the hopes of a more organized battle against its colonial oppressors. This led to the creation of what was, essentially, the first “American” flag, the Continental Colors.

"During the American Revolution, the Continental Congress took a break from writing the Articles of Confederation and adopted a resolution stating that “the flag of the United States be thirteen alternate stripes red and white” and that “the Union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new Constellation.” The national flag, which became known as the “Stars and Stripes,” was based on the “Grand Union” flag, a banner carried by the Continental Army in 1776 that also consisted of 13 red and white stripes.

"Flag Day also marks the birthday of the U.S. Army; Congress authorized “the American Continental Army” on June 14, 1775. The Continental Army was created to coordinate military efforts of the Colonies in their war of independence against the British, who sought to keep their American lands under control. General George Washington was the commander-in-chief of the army throughout the war. The Continental Army was supplemented by local militias and volunteer troops that were either loyal to individual states or otherwise independent."
