Gulu, Uganda.

The rockets had screamed through the night, scattering the last of Amin's soldiers into the darkness.

At dawn, Tanzanian and UNLF forces moved down the road toward the town, expecting ambush.

No resistance came.

The Amin soliders had fled.

The Fall of Gulu: The Night the War Turned - 1979

Then the people emerged.

The Acholi, who had suffered years of targeted violence under Amin's regime, poured into the streets to greet their liberators.

Women waved branches torn from trees, dancing with joy that spilled from years of fear.

Jubilant cries filled the air as soldiers were embraced, their arrival marking not just a military victory but a personal salvation for a community long terrorized.

The Tanzanian troops, strangers in a foreign land, found themselves treated not as invaders but as saviours by a people who had known only suffering under the fleeing dictator's hand.

Beyond the town, government forces pushed north toward the strategic Pakwach bridge spanning the Nile.

To their astonishment, they found it completely unguarded, Amin's retreat had been so hasty that even this vital crossing had been abandoned.

They seized it without a shot, opening the last strategic road to Amin's tribal home in the West Nile district.

With Gulu taken and Pakwach secured, only the city of Arua remained in pro-Amin hands.

Army officers now predicted confidently that the war might end within a week.

The fall of Gulu was more than a military victory; it was a psychological turning point.

For the Acholi people, who had been among Amin's primary targets, the arrival of the liberators was a moment of profound relief.

For the Tanzanian forces, it was proof that their campaign had not been in vain.

And for Uganda, it was a sign that the brutal chapter of Idi Amin's rule was finally drawing to a close.

The roads to the north were open, the bridges secured, and the dictator's forces were in full retreat.

Within weeks, Amin would flee the country entirely, and Uganda would begin the long, painful process of rebuilding.

But on that May morning in Gulu, the people danced in the streets, and for a fleeting moment, the future seemed bright.

The nightmare was over.

The dawn had finally come.

What does it mean when a town falls without a shot, and the people who were once hunted pour into the streets to embrace an army of strangers as liberators?

The fall of Gulu was not a battle; it was a reckoning.

The guns fell silent.

The women danced.

The bridge was taken.

The road to the end of Amin's Uganda lay open.
