Is transmedia storytelling about giving more branded content to the fans? Perhaps a ploy to milk passionate fans' money to line studios' pockets? Crazy how 3 films stretched into movies, TV shows, comics, video games, merch, or any possible item to make a dime.#ENGL407SocialMedia
My favourite online brand personality has to be @dbrand - great brand development and marketing mixed with undertones of snark, rudeness and entertainment when interacting with their followers.

Hey #ENGL407SocialMedia! A friend recently showed me how to access your ad-personalization topics - what Google thinks you like. Anything strange, unexpected, or wildly inaccurate? Tells us about it!

Now, the real question: Are we unfairly taking away business from the legitimate advertisers (that spend criminal amounts of money for our attention)? The online advertising space seems to only ever pick 1 winner, it seems: Advertiser or Consumer (but never both).

Since Christmas, I've been using the @brave browser. It blocks all regular ads and replaces them with their own. In return, the browser provides you with crypto, which can be donated to your favorite websites.

@finngoodfellow Personally, I think if we had been able to control who collects data when this tech was still emerging, then we would have had as good of a digital experience. At this timepoint though, I'm sure that we've dug our grave too deep for any hope to crawl back out!
Since learning about surveillance capitalism, I've been thinking: Should I even care about my digital privacy? Chances are everything about me will be leaked sooner or later anyway, so I may as well take advantage of a more personalized experience #ENGL407SocialMedia#FuckIt
@smhumphreys To be honest, I think you are right. I think that even if consumers were to give up all privacy, there would be no noticeable difference to the end user. The only party that gains anything is the one collecting our data.
.@BuzzFeed really is a one-stop-shop for all things online these days. Is anyone else highly uncomfortable that national news is sandwiched between clickbait? This definitely screams "reputable news source" to me. /s

.@Google in 2010: Nah, we can't ethically operate in the Chinese market. It just wouldn't be right with all this government over-reach and censorship!
Google in 2018: Hold my algorithm, I've spotted some untapped data-sources.

@teresasammut @Google@Spotify Yes! I totally fell for it! What an easy way for Google and Spotify to sneak some more data out of me while promoting their product. Really shows how people take anything that's free these days.
โWhen thereโs bad news from the bathroom scale, the open-endedness of blogging makes it possible to cast the gain as just a temporary setback, not a failure.โ - Rettberg
It is easy to hide behind failures, but social media can be a tool to change that.

For machine learning, you need sample data and lots of it. Weirdly, Google has 1.2 trillion searches-per-yearโs worth of data to feed towards their search machine learning. I wonder why Google has a monopoly๐ค#ENGL407SocialMedia
Today, anyone w/ internet access is in the public โ uninformed strangers (ie. me) possess the ability to influence societal behaviors. Is this free speech or a disinformation generator?
