Geophysics and Python enthusiast ๐๐ Postdoc in the @EarthByteGroup at @Sydney_Uni fusing tectonic reconstructions with mantle geochemistry to explain ๐
BUT if the plume weakens, it can de-anchor from the ridge and facilitate rapid ridge migration.
This has important implications for plume-related volcanism and plate boundary evolution.

In time for #EarthScienceWeek our paper published in @NatureComms today explores the interactions between spreading ridges and mantle plumes. ๐ฅ
We found that when mantle plumes are coupled to spreading ridges, they can act as an anchor โ๏ธ and impede spreading ridge migration.
Very proud of @sydneyunigeo PhD student, Chris Alfonso, who just published his 1st paper in GSA Bulletin! ๐ This project used spatio-temporal data mining (powered by #pyGPlates + #gplately) and machine learning to help find new porphyry copper deposits.

@RosGleadow I think this is only a problem when feeding cows chicken-derived โproteinโ. At least thatโs what I gathered from this podcast. Feeding this to cows is against the rules in Australia but not a problem in the US.

Thanks to the @arc_gov_au for funding my #IndustryFellowship with BHP to simulate how groundwater moves copper through sub-surface sedimentary layers.
A huge thank you to my friends and mentors, in particular Dietmar Mรผller and @SetonMaria, for helping me on this journey! ๐ซถ
Congrats to A/Prof Sonia Liu and Dr @BenRMather for receiving Early Career Industry Fellowships from @arc_gov_au ๐๐
They'll collab with industry to address opportunities for improvement across poultry and mining ๐ค๐ชจ

Just in time for #EGU24 โ GPlates 2.5 has just been released, now with subduction teeth! ๐ฆท This long awaited feature means thereโs no more second-guessing your subduction polarity in plate reconstructions. @AuScope@EarthByteGroup@sydneyunigeo
Very nice to host @Geoniette at @sydneyunigeo as part of our @Sydney_Uni ๐ค @UofGlasgow Ignition Grant on how variations in subduction angle affect volcanism and porphyry copper formation. A great start the year with lots of conversations and collaborations! @EarthByteGroup
A huge congratulations to @SeismoEChambers from @dias_geophysics on uncovering the thermal structure of Ireland ๐ This was a huge effort incorporating many geophysical datasets to help explore for geothermal energy prospects in Ireland ๐ฎ๐ช

New Academy Fellow Prof @LouisMoresi FAA wants to know why Earth appears to be the only planet in our solar system with tectonic plates and how that sets it apart. The answers could help determine whether distant exoplanets may be suitable for life.
