Bedford horticulture students kicked off #Soil and #WaterConservation week by seeding wildflowers in the recently constructed planter boxes that are part of the outdoor classroom. #Iowa#TeachAg#WQI
@IADeptAg funded #WaterQuality structure season is well underway in Taylor County, IA. This site drains approximately 90 acres of row crop & will allow trap nutrient and sediment run off as well as provide recreational benefits. #WQI#agriculture#conservation
Conventional tilled #soil is ponding on the left sending vital #precipitation and nutrients down river. Notill soil on the right is infiltrating and storing precipitation on the #farm where it belongs.
#Tillage on the left & #notill on the right. Many turn to tillage to dry out or fluff of the #soil but he we see ponding on the tilled soil due to lack of structure while the notill soil has aggregation & water infiltration. Store you $$$ in the bank don't send it down the river
In honor of #notill november @IowaNRCS is promoting #KEEPTHESTUBBLE I started this adventure a bit before November. Does this qualify as a long term no-tiller with #covers
It's easy to say "I love my job" when I get to see projects like this completed. It's not only fun work but also an opportunity to advance #waterquality efforts in #iowa as well as water for #livestock and recreation options too. #wqi#agriculture#conservation
4 hours later, multiple trips to the store for parts and a few disagreements later this kid successfully completed his pumpkin decorating & book report for school. If it's #agriculture he is all in & I can't think of a better way to spend a Sunday afternoon. #tractormac#farmall
Near perfect #iowa morning to survey terraces. This farm is long term #notill with #covercrops soon to be added to the system. Terraces and notill are only part of the equation. The added biology from cover crops will provide #soilhealth. #agriculture#conservation
Show us your #Harvest2021🌽David Loutzenhiser of Blockton picking corn in Ringgold County #Iowa with his 8 y/o grandson, Gabe Roed. Both were excited to be picking ear corn on a beautiful Sunday afternoon with their new to them corn picker. @USDA_NRCS
Is it really #harvest21 if you aren't mixing old school with new school while having a grandpa show his 8 year old grandson the ropes? #farm#family#iowa
More #WQI ponds to improve water quality in Taylor Co. #Iowa courtesy of partnerships between local landowners, @IADeptAg, @IowaNRCS and Taylor county SWCD.
Taylor Co. SWCD first @IADeptAg#WQI funded structure is checked of the list. 4 more to complete this summer. Love partnering with local landowners, state and federal agencies to advance #water#quality efforts in #iowa. #agriculture#conservation
Calving day 1- This is fun. Day 2- finding our groove. Day 3- call the vet to let a 35 pound squirt out the side door. "I'm over it, I don't want to see another cow as long as I live. " #cattle#agriculture#iowa#AgTwitter
You may not realize it w/ sub zero wind-chills, but it's the beginning of pond season in #Iowa. Call your local SWCD for funding. These structures control grade stabilization, provide a source of water for livestock and recreational opportunities. #conservation#agriculture
