@FightofFaith Great is Thy Faithfulness
And Can It Be?
Oh Church Arise
Worship:
Shout to the Lord
How great is our God
Amazing Grace ( my chains are gone)
Pastors. Question:
Do you prefer a funeral service or memorial service? Sometimes I wonder if the convenience of a scheduled memorial service undermines a healthy grieving process. What do think and why? #pastors#edstetzer
@DrFrankTurek Celsus (philosopher, c. 175 CE; quoted by Origen): Attacks Jesus as a sorcerer and son of a poor woman but assumes he existed and performed “miracles.”
@DrFrankTurek Lucian of Samosata (Greek satirist, The Death of Peregrine, c. 166 CE)
- Mockingly describes Christians worshiping a “crucified sage” who introduced their laws and whom they call their lawgiver.
Mara bar-Serapion (Stoic philosopher from Roman Syria, letter to his son, c. 73 CE or shortly after)
- Refers to the Jews executing their “wise king,” after which their kingdom was taken away, yet the king’s “new laws” lived on. Most scholars see this as a reference to Jesus.
Suetonius (Roman historian, Lives of the Twelve Caesars, c. 121 CE)
- Refers to Emperor Claudius expelling Jews from Rome (c. 49 CE) because of disturbances “at the instigation of Chrestus” (widely accepted as a misspelling of Christus/Jesus). Also notes Nero’s punishment of Christians.
@DrFrankTurek Pliny the Younger (Roman governor, letter to Emperor Trajan, c. 112 CE)
- Describes Christians in Bithynia who “sing hymns to Christ as to a god,” meet weekly, and refuse to curse Christ. Confirms early worship of Jesus as divine and treats him as a historical founder.
