In the early 90’s, England lacked the quality of the world’s top teams but they never lacked heart. They have always had players like Ince, Pearce, Butcher, Rooney etc however now they have the quality but lost the heart. The physical element in British football was a remnant of British culture, there was always an appreciation for players who put an honest shift in and for the tackle so it’s a bit strange to see it disappear. I expect them to win today but the real tests lie ahead. England have a squad of largely likable players and that’s part of the problem, they need a few bastards.
