President Donald Trump's US🇺🇸 government is warning armed groups and their leaders in Ethiopia🇪🇹, including the Tigray People's Liberation Front #TPLF, against “pushing Ethiopia down the wrong path,” as it criticizes the rebel group for its “poor decision to launch a large-scale offensive today.”

“Rejecting dialogue sponsored by the AU under President Obasanjo and engaging in an unwinnable fight does nothing for the people. Other armed groups would be wise to avoid this,” the US Embassy in Addis Ababa says in a statement.

The US government says it “has tools to sanction additional leaders who try to push Ethiopia down the wrong path,” while maintaining that “a reasonable political dialogue is the right way to go.”

On Wednesday, #TPLF launched a major offensive against PM Abiy Ahmed's Ethiopia’s federal government, threatening renewed conflict and regional instability.

This week, seven #Ethiopian armed rebel groups, drawn from Tigray, Amhara, Oromia, Afar, Somali and Benishangul-Gumuz, including #TPLF, announced plans to overthrow Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's government and set up an inclusive transitional government.

Africa's economic “Big Three”, South Africa, Egypt and Nigeria, with a combined GDP of $1.29 trillion, account for nearly 40% of the continent's economy. Yet none of their presidents will be at the UN General Assembly, the annual diplomatic gathering this week in New York.

A conspicuous absence that carries enormous economic and diplomatic weight in Africa.

South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa is booked off from public engagements due to ill health. His medical team has advised him to rest and recover following his return from the BRICS summit in India. Instead, his Foreign Minister Ronald Lamola will lead Pretoria's delegation.

Egypt's President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi is staying away. No reason has been given for his absence, but sources indicate he's remaining in Egypt for crucial, rare diplomatic meetings due to pressing regional crises requiring his direct attention in the Middle East. His Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly will lead Cairo's delegation at the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Nigeria's President Bola Tinubu is now in Paris on an extended vacation, after leaving London days ago following his one-week stay. He departed Abuja on August 30 for a three-week leave in Europe, and is expected to return to Nigeria in late September, "ready and refreshed" for the upcoming elections, in which he is seeking re-election. His Vice President Kashim Shettima will lead Abuja's delegation in New York.

Seven #Ethiopian armed rebel groups, including the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF), have announced plans to overthrow Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's government and set up an inclusive transitional government.

The groups include the TPLF, Amhara Fano National Movement, the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA), Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF), the Afar Revolutionary Democratic Unity Front (Ugugumo), the Benishangul Peoples’ Liberation Movement and the Gumuz Peoples’ Democratic Movement

They claim that Ethiopia has become "a country in which law and order have collapsed; millions have fallen into severe poverty and been displaced; hope for its citizens has vanished; and the government declares one destructive war after another," a statement reads in part.

These groups, drawn from Tigray, Amhara, Oromia, Afar, Somali and Benishangul-Gumuz, claim that the federal government led by Abiy Ahmed is accumulating control at the national level while pushing regional communities to poverty.

The group calling itself "Alliance for Survival", says it will "remove Prosperity’s personalist and dictatorial system, which has endangered the survival of our peoples and the security of the country; and bring about the establishment of an inclusive transitional government guided by a transitional charter."

The TPLF and Ethiopia’s federal government have been longstanding rivals, confronting each other during the 2020–2022 conflict in Tigray. The war, which saw a widespread ethnic violence and other atrocities, is estimated to have claimed hundreds of thousands of lives.

PM Abiy's government has also been engaged in a prolonged conflict with the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) since 2018, as fighting between federal forces and the armed group has continued in parts of the Oromia region.

Fano, an alliance of armed groups from Ethiopia’s Amhara region, fought alongside federal forces in Tigray war against the TPLF resulting in hundreds of thousands of deaths and widespread ethnic atrocities. Fano later rose against the government, triggering a deadly conflict.

Uganda is something else. President Yoweri Museveni's cabinet ministers now seem more accountable to his son, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, than to president himself. When they all go wrong, they apologize to his son or he will sack them from his father's cabinet.

Increasingly, the president has shifted his powers to his son.

This minister here is pleading her innocence. Muhoozi has threatened to kick her out of his father's cabinet if she doesn't apologize in 72 hours.
