I picked up a $140 takeout order for my family tonight and left a $10 cash tip at the counter
The cashier looked down at the $10 bill, looked at the screen, and said: "That’s under 10%"
I thought he was joking. "It's a takeout order, I drove here to pick it up myself."
He called the shift manager over.
She stepped up to the counter and said: "If you can afford $140 in food, you can afford a minimum 20% tip for our kitchen staff."
I said: "Tipping on takeout is optional. You didn't seat us, serve us, or clean a table."
She replied: "Then we have the right to refuse service," and pointed toward the line behind me.
I could feel every eye in the restaurant on my back, trying to publicly shame me into handing over another $18 for a bag of food I was carrying out myself.
So I made a decision right there.
I told her to cancel the entire $140 order, refund my card, and walked out.
I don't have a problem tipping for good service. I have a problem with businesses using public guilt and employee shaming to make customers subsidize hourly wages they refuse to pay.
Was canceling the order justified, or is expecting 20% on takeout normal now
North Carolina Democrat LaKesha Womack, who pulled off a surprise win over Republican Rep. Tim Moore on Tuesday, is due in court next week on a felony car theft charge, per the New York Post.
She was served the felony summons at a campaign event just weeks before the election.
A few days ago, Austin Payne, a 15-year-old White boy in Georgia, was hunted, shot, and left to die in an abandoned apartment by four black teen males.
He called his mom after being attacked and shot, telling her he was dying.
She found his body the next morning after searching all night for him.
Charged with his murder: Jansquincey Donaldson, 15; Omari Marion, 15; Adarious Wallace, 16; Detravion Parker, 22.
National media has been completely silent.
If four White teens had done this to a Black kid, it would dominate cable news for days.
Instead, silence.
They covered the Nolan Wells case wall-to-wall for a drowning.
Yet this kid was hunted like an animal and brutally murdered, and because his skin is White, his story will never be told.
I couldn’t imagine being his mother and getting that call.
Rest easy, Austin. 💔
