Good thread. It is interesting that we now use "intelligence" as opposed to the more keen and concrete, "intellect." The later carries echoes of an older treatment, whereby the reverse of your thesis is held, namely, that it is a simple attribute composed of many complex ones. On this general account, the intellect is the faculty for the apprehension of being. Intelligence, with its softer, rounder quality, is an apt signifier of the outward manifestations of the intellect, or, in the case of AI, its advanced mimesis.

In itself, though, the intellect is precisely that alone about us which is simple in the strict sense. It is both that which is properly *one* about us, and that by which we apprehend the one. In understanding, for instance, the disparate are gathered up under one sign and treated as one.

This is what is lacking in the advanced mimesis of intellect. It is not gaps in the domain. Indeed, an isolated monastic figure of extraordinary intellect would have many such gaps, but we would not doubt his intellect. What is lacking is the failure to gather the many under the one, and this may remain lacking even when the domain gaps are closed. That remains to be seen.
